intermittant internet
« on: October 25, 2006, 10:32:57 PM »
I have two computers on a Lan at my house on a 3 meg cable service.

Often, the interweb goes out for a while.  Sometimes it comes back ok after a few seconds, other times, i'm unplugging and plugging in modems and routers.

I got them both at the local Best Buy.
I'm not going to lie, I got the cheapest Linksys I could find on both.

Did I get what I paid for?
Are more expensive ones worth it?
Are there different speeds for modems or routers?

They do run pretty hot to the touch, i'm thinking they are at the end of their life cycle.

I have called my ISP, but all they ever say is that everything is good on their end, and they can have someone come out.  I don't want to pay for that.

Any similar experiences?  suggestions?

I had a very similar problem myself. Turned out squirrels had eaten the insulation off a part of the cable going into my house. The sheilding underneath had corroded and was breaking down. This in turn caused intermitant noise in my line that my modem couldnt filter out. After the cable company replaced the line I havent had anymore problems.

My cable company also had said they didnt see any problems at first, but I called them one day while it was going in and out. I had a tech stay on the line with me and to keep pinging my modem. Sure enough it did go out and he was able to make note of the issue.

something noone seems to think about .. is that lots of people have 3mb 5 mb DSL/cable connections. but thats only the down stream speed .. the upstream stream may only be 128k .. 512k ..  and sometimes depending on what your doing its very easy to saturate the upstream and kill your connection .. also using DHCPaddresses ( having the address assigned to your network cards) i found can cause problems and lag out networks too.

I can't think of any way that having DHCP handing out addresses can in any way at all affect your bandwidth. However, issues like the aforementioned cable degradation and poor physical connections at splitters, etc. can certainly cause intermittent internet access. Outdoor splitters with oxidized connections are a big culprit.

well i dont know how having DHCP can cause it .. i just know that i have had major issues when i have used DHCP assigned addressed. it cause my connection to lag out when i switched to a static IP it stopped. no explanation for it just know that was the cause of my problem.

tapakeg,  Like Wolf said, I had a similar issue.   cable installer used about an extra 30 feet of cable (more than he needed) and just rolled it up under the house.  after several  months of dropped connections and reseting modems and tech guys saying everything looked good, finally was able to get tech sent to the house.  He removed the extra 30 feet of cable, add an extra filter to the line, and no further issues.  I've been using the same linksys router for the last 3 years, no issues with that, but I have used up about 3 of time warners Toshiba cable modems.   Unless Nevada has some weird rules, there is no charge for tech support to come fix your cable if its messed up.

I have the linksys wRT54G v4, and it locks up occasionally. I think I will install that linux firmware on it.

Depending on what DHCP command is being executed, it can cause a pause in your Internet connection.  Worse case is around 20 seconds for some things.  Should not happen often, but it can happen.

Everytime your DHCP refreshes, it stops your connection, but that is a very brief time.  Then there is the time when your IP address expires and the ISP has it set to give you a new one.  This can cause a very long delay in your Internet connection, especially if the gateway changes.

The router and modem are linksys,

not dual routers
