As to the movie, I want to see it.   I understand that Eastwood shows both the sickness in the Imperial Army as well as the Japanese as individuals, some noble and some not, some blinded by nationalism and others aware of the wrongness of the horror they are in.

From a neutral, historical standpoint it seems remarkable that Lt. Gen. Kuribayashi turn what was supposed to be a 5 day Allied victory into a 36 day slog through hell.  He seems to have been far more compentent than about any other Japanese Army commander I know of and it is our good fortune that Japan so wasted him.

One review I read said it was a a horror movie in some ways.

I saw the movie this week - I think it's much better than Flags.
