People who are obsessed with their statistics tend to be mean, selfish, and cheap. They'll usually do anything to protect or pad their numbers, including "gaming the game." They don't play nice, they only care about their own fun and no one else's. And in the end, they don't have fun, either. I know, because I was there.
I play for both score and rank to a degree and still have fun. Of course I'm not that good at it (as my scores will attest to). As long as I'm in the top 2-400 overall I'm a happy buckaroo and it's easy to get there while still helping my country and not "gaming the game" other than to the extent you have to play every aspect of the game to accomplish that. I don't think of myself as mean, selfish or cheap as I'll often give up targets to others (far from "doing anything to pad" my scores).
So, each camp I make a couple buff runs, try to get a field capture in both a C-47 and a M-3, get a couple of attack kills and some attack damage and a few vehicle kills and some vehicle damage. I can do all of these while simply playing the game against the enemys and it's a nice diversion from the way I spend the rest of my time; in fighters, mostly furballing (an almost sure way to pad your deaths).
