I'd be very curious to see what kind of stick you were using that had no throttle built into it.

For darn near 10 years and untill 3 days ago an Thrustmaster X fighter

and doing fairly well with one I might add.
Just using that and the keyboard

Now I have a CH fighter stick and Pro throttle :D

The current stick I have is very limited (only four buttons, 4 way hat) but it does have a throttle wheel. So my biggest issue probably is using the keyboard for both rudder and my up/diagonal views. Which pedals could eliminate. But a throttle unit could also give me more buttons, an 8 way hat, and reduce the number of functions I use my keyboard for.

You have your rudder set to three buttons on the throttle? How do you find this setup?

im still getting used to it all but getting better at it with every flight.
Mostly the problem is in simply remember where I programed everything. Such as landing gear and whellbrakes which has made for some rather interesting final approaches and landings LOL

The three buttons used for the rudder is working pretty good. Though Im finding that by working the throttle I dont even need to use my rudder as much.

I find I am tending to change the programming from flight to flight to where everything seems natural and so I dont hit one button by mistake when trying to do something else.

I know quite a few peopel the last couple nights have received check 6's they didnt need LOL

sorry bout dat guys. bear with me till I get it all nailed down

NEGATIVE it is a C.A.T. stick

Owned 2 of them, the main trigger craps out after a week or three.  Still have one, but I have configured button 3 as the main fire, and button 4 as fire all.  Main fire trigger doesn't last on that stick.

I've got the CH throttle and pedals, and I'll tell you that IMHO, the pedals give you much more capability in flight than the throttle.  The throttle just takes you up over the top.  Regardless of which one you get first, they will both be valuable and give you much more capability.  They will not, however, make you a better pilot.  :aok

Good luck,

cc on Stoney's post.  You'll get more out of your aircraft with pedals if you have to choose a single device to add.

I use CH pedals (now) - but using them is a concession to the desire to have a single controller for the older games that support but one.

I prefered the feel and mechanical construction of the Simpeds over the CH ones.

I think throttles and rudder pedals are equally important....You SHOULD have them both.:D

I cant imagine being competitive without either, I use a twisty rudder logitech with throttle control. It cost less than $50. US, and it has more buttons than I use.  I programmed them all, but cant seem to re-program myself to use them.

I have always wanted to upgrade to the CH gear with pedals, but the price combined with the month of getting used to the pedals,  always brings me back to another $50 twisty.

Would definitely go after the pedals first.  The pedals get more out of planes allowing you to fully use the rudder on planes.  Plane such as the P38 you will be able to do more with it when you have pedals.

Agree with those that say "Get Rudders First."

A Throttle adds convenience, no doubt.

A Rudder Pedal set adds lethality in the air in almost any situation.

If you could only have one, what would you rather have? I know what I would want...

Plus, you can map the Throttle Up and Throttle Down keystrokes to a Hat on the stick - it works fine, and I did that for at least 6 months...

Get a twisty stick with a small throttle thing on the base if that's all your budget allows

You can also map the rudder to the front 3 buttons on the throttle as I did.

New setup has a bit of a learning curve as all I had before was the old XFighter and used my keyboard exclusively for everything but shooting and views which were mapped to the stick. I seemed to be relitively competative with it.

Now Im not used to being able to work both the ruddrs and the throttle at the same time. Leading to more then a few G related blackouts I hadnt experienced before

Between the death of my Evo (the worst 30 buck investment in gaming yet) and the purchase of the X-52 I now use, I attempted to map rudder controls to an old gameport CH stick I have. That was the most frustrating thing I have yet managed to setup with regards to my controls. I suppose it's a matter of what you're used to, and how determined you are to adapt. I doubt, given what I've seen in other people's stick profiles, that anyone but a monkey or lunatic could tolerate mine, but it's interesting to see the wide variety of setups.

I've used twisty sticks almost exclusively, and trying to adapt to rudder input as a set of buttons proved almost impossible. I'm still threatening to destroy an old stick to make it into rudder peds, but I've yet to rationalize wasting the time, figuring I'll never get used to using my feet.
