Call me crazy, but it looks like a Phalanx CIWS (is that what it's called?) on the back of that truck.

It's the land version of the Mk15 Phalanx CIWS. Nice call krusty :)

That other pic looks like the radar array used to detect the incoming threats.

Just a guess seeing as how the whole system is still classified ;)

Not against IEDs. I think it's a static mount being shipped to some place that will need defenses (like a base or important building). I don't think it would funciton off the back of a truck without the radar to guide it.

Its an odd sort of setup for point defense though considering the relativly short range of the 20mm cannon, about 1000M effective.   Would be cool to see a battery of these things firing at night though :aok

its an attempt to neutralize the mortor threat..
problem is it can turn the mortor into an airburst round if not killed before 30 meters of the compound.

Plus the action of the weapon system limits its usuage near civilian areas for obvious reasons.
