Basic overclocking gains....
« on: March 03, 2007, 11:31:23 PM »
just a quick update....

I've had my e6600/PT890T-A up and runing for a few days now. all in all was a brainless build. Only glitch was my copy of XP Pro was early edition (not even SP1) so it didnt recognize the pci-e slot. Once I got updated media all went smoothly. System runs great with with 2G of 2nd tier OCZ DDR2 (5-5-5). Bench mark at "stock" was ~109,000 on aquamark. When I bumped VC to "high quality" dropped to ~95,000.

The board is actually quite nice for a freebie (frys bundle) with easy onboard bios overclocking. I bumped the CPU to 275 for starters....temp is identical to stock so far. AM went to 110,000 at high setting for a bump of roughly 15%. Downloaded coolbits and used the auto overclock to bump my 7900GT (556,829). Aquamark ran at ~115,000 in high quality.

I havent bumped memory voltage at all....might bump it .o5v just to see....

I dont see any need to really OC the system given the tremendous capability at stock....but its very simple. Not close to the capability my DFI lanparty or gigabyte boards had....but alot better then ECS's reputation would suggest. Only negative at all is the via onboard sound is clearly inferior to the onboard nvidia chipset.

These specials always change and I'm sure there are better baords out there....but if your looking to but a "good" system togeather on the cheap I do think this is a good option....

BTW what is a good cpu speed for the 6600??

As HIGH as it will go stable ?? eheh i would say somewhere between 3.3 -3.6 ghz would be nice       :D    3.0 ghz is a nice round number thou .

From what ive read on conroe overclocking is that they have a huge overhead just waiting to be turned up.    I just read an article that said Asus has a new bios out for the P5B that unlocks the multiplier down and UP!!! in some cases! What a great board that would be .   Good luck Humble , Happy OC'in   38

I dont really trust the MB all that much. Basically you just type in the bus speed you want...I mumped it to 275 and now 285....looks like it bumped voltage a bit.

so FSB is at 1140 and cpu is running at 2.56....so long way to go:) Temp hasnt moved 1 degree yet on cpu....guess I'll kepp creeping it up...:)

make sure you test it under load after each bump up in speed.  A fairly decent test is to run prime95 in torture test mode while playing AH, or run two copies of prime95 and set the affinity to the separate cpu cores in the prime95 options.  That should load up both cpu cores.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Just a note for those who might look at this MB. The bios detects the FSB appropriate to the CPU. All other OC is integrated by the bios. Thats why I was so puzzled since I'm used to true OC boards. EVERYTHING is bumped in tune with the FSB. This limits you to about 15% max (10-12% is a good "safe" limit). This doesnt touch the potential of the CPU....but its a nice "OC lite" that will yield a pretty nice pop in performance. DO NOT EXCEED this unless your comfortable with system recovery via DOS commands. You will hose something in your system somewhere if you exceed the "magic number" since your bumbing alot of stuff beyond tolerence.

So if your a serious OC type go elsewhere....if you want a point and shoot moderate overclock that is rock solid and seems to put zero strain on the system its not bad at all.
