You have been told the Earth is going to explode. A ship has been prepared to send you to an earth-like world, one that has no advanced life-forms such as humans. You may take 20 people with you. No more. Who do you take to make sure the human race survives.

Not names of people...just positions such as a doctor.

You may think you would want your family to go..but for each brother, sister, etc, but they will just be taking up valuable space unless they have a skill that would help you.

Well, if the goal is to ensure the survival of the human race, genetic diversity is key.  I'd take an assortment of exotic flavors and colors.  But I guess to be true to the gene pool, there'd have to be some other Y chromosome types to accompany me.  But I would have first dibs :D

A couple of doctors, some subsistence farmers, hunter-gatherer types, a naturalist/botanist would all be included.

"Doctor, you mentioned the ration of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?" -General Buck Turgidson

"Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature" -Dr Strangelove

As 20 people is hardly enough to make a viable gene pool, you might as well have fun.

Skuzzy is right, even 2000 people not really enough to have a viable gene pool without doing some pretty high end genetic manipulation.

As for the question, start with those people here on earth that make something out of nothing.

Farmers, ranchers, etc absolute # 1 if you want to eat on the new planet.
Fishermen to keep you alive from the sea while farmers are getting started.
Lumberjacks & sawyers if you want to build anything to live in. Boats for fishermen, etc.
Miners/prospectors if you want to build anything other than log huts.

You'll need a potter to be able to fire dishes, pottery, storage jars, etc.
Hunters & trappers to keep your area free of pest & vermin, as well as adding to the food diversity.

To that you can add
Baker to take the farmers flour and make it into bread.
Butcher to take the carcasses and turn it into steaks.
Spinners/weavers if you want clothing after the first year.
You'll need flax, sheep (for wool) Cotton or their equivilents.
And assuming those men & women will do what I think they'll do on those long cold nights your going to need a teacher or 2 to teach the children.

Starting over with a small group would require ever man & woman aboard be a jack of all trades. Able to make the tools to make the tools. And that my friends is incredibly rare in this day and age.

with that kind of gene pool you may as well pick attractive hardy types because it will take a few thousand years for it to all work out anyway and the original genotypes will all be insignificant.

Attractive and hearty to shorten the wait for the inevitable.

Too easy :-)

Another bloke (a SF soldier, either asian or negro) and sixteen female, pregnant (not to either myself or GI Joe),recent college graduates of varying fields of expertise and race.
A midwife!!!, and a belly dancing barmaid who can cook. (both pregnant, neither to either of the men involved in the programme)

The SF guy is obviously a good genetic specimen, is multi-skilled, usefull in the ongoing breeding programme, defence of our settlement and most important of all, will know how to keep his own, and my, arse safe and hidden from eighteen pissed off pregnant women for extended periods of time when the need arose.
