Oh dear god...$500 for a phone that has a lot of bells and whistles?  Don't think so.

That money could get me a new PC rig or a long way to a new one.

My 5 year old Nokia phone got trashed by the race car Memorial Day weekend. I was heart broken. All I ever needed or wanted in a cell phone, it stored contacts, it had 2.2 hours of talk time, and it would send and receive when no other phone would get close. Damn bunch of crap on a phone, all I need is a phone. I bought an old Nokia 6015 to get me by while I have my old 3089 repaired for $45 and put it back in service. As long as it works with the networks, I'll keep it and laugh at everyone else who can't keep a battery up and can't get connected.

It's the interchangable interfaces that excites me. The possibilities are unlimited. In 5 years all phones will use this basic design. The iPhone will do to cellphones what the iPod did to the Walkman.

This is probably the incubus to the Tricorder.

interchangable touchscreen interface? nothing new, exciting, or even remotly interesting in that.

and you have to look at the screen if you want to do anything...

meh.

Err duh. The Treo's and Palm's have done that for years. Treo ditched the  onscreen keyboard on the 2nd gen devices (7 years ago'ish), onscreen keyboards suck. The PDA's still retain it but most consider that a dead/obselete line.

Hey apple fans, welcome to the 21st century. I've been getting push email, fullscreen video, MP3 playback, games, word doc's, excel doc's, databases, telnet clients, can mount my phone as USB storage, pocket voice record, camera, google maps, bluetooth (with A2DP Wireless stereo headphones), web browsing, etc.... not to mention the phone/contacts/calender/notes functionality.

Heck, I've even got iPhony, an iPhone skin that pisses off the rabid mac fans.

I'm not a rabid mac fan. Heck, I don't think I've ever owned anything made by Apple. But I saw what the iPod did to personal music and the iPhone looks to be the same for person communication. I dunno, time will tell... but iStillwantone.

I doubt it will do the same, the iphone is missing some significant features 'popular' in the smartphone market.

After choosing the E-mail option, I was presented with a blank message, not including his e-mail address or any of what I'd typed before. Of course he's not in my Address Book, so I had to go back to the Mail section, write his e-mail address on my hand (since you can't copy and paste??) with a PEN.... analog style (wtf!!), then type it in manually into that new message with a new subject. Is this a joke? How is that productive at all... shame on you Apple.

No cut'n'paste? Bwahahaahahahah welcome to 80's.

My son has a Creative Zen Nano and it works perfectly...IF you have a computer with an Intel processor. If you use an AMD (at least in my experience) it will refuse to recognize the device if it is plugged into the USB connections on either the front, back or via powered USB hub. This was two years ago when he got it for Christmas and they may have worked that kink out since then but I haven't tried since we loaded the software on my laptop from work and he uses that for uploading his songs to the player.

The iPods are just good, real good.  There are other players that are better in different areas, but the iPod is a reliable, known factor, and easy to use, especially if you use iTunes.

For myself, I chose the Insignia ns-dv4g, a 4 gig flash player.  I love it, great player and it has two headphone jacks.  It was a great player, but going with a non-ipod, i could have just as easily ended up with a lemon, like I did on the player before that (A Kanguru 512 meg flash player that was slow and sucked).  If you get a non-iPod, try it out in a store first to make sure it's good.  The iPod is the only one I'd say you could safely buy and enjoy without ever seeing one.  That's not saying it's the best, but it's definitely not the worst.
