So, we were having a picnic at Lake Delta (Rome, NY). We were under a pavilion (surrounded in trees). There was music playing, but out of that music, I heard a faint sound. I walk out from under it. Low and behold, a C47 is flying over! I thought it was pretty cool...considering not very many were flying...

I do not have a picture, because I did not have a camera...

It also had invasion stripes...

You might be surprised to know how many C-47's/DC-3's are still flying.  They're still cool none the less :) :aok

I learned the hard way to keep a camera with me at all times. I keep a digital camera in my truck now all the time just in case

C-47/DC3 are making good runs south of the border.  My Great Uncle ran a courier service back and forth between Mexico, Guatamala, Venezuela in the good years.  During my college summer years I got alot of stick time in a DC3.  It was very maintenance intensive but was fun.  It was hot, dirty and smelly job but I loved the airplane and the flying.  Yeah it is just as slow as the AH version.    :aok

My driver was a parajumper in WW2, he use to jump from C-47's, he use to ride in those planes that were gliders that got towed in(not sure what they were called), he has some pretty good storys about it.

Yeah, seems like most of AH could say that too, but they'd have to add the words

"school bus"

in between ...

Trust me I'm not rich, I just can't drive(long story) so I have to pay someone to do it for me.

I am very fortunate to have a window-cubicle just next to the runways at Long Beach Airport, (LGA). The former Douglas factories surrounding the airport are now owned by Boeing, and they still make C-17's here, and we see them take off and land almost every day. We also occasionally see military jets roll in and out for maintenance, including the B-2 Bomber, several F/A-18s, and lots of T-38's.

We also see our fair share of Warbirds, and have seen in the past 12 months a B24, a B17, a B25, and a few Mustangs. They apparently come in for various maintenance items too.

This is also a commercial and general-aviation airport too, so there's lots of modern passenger gets and old private planes.

But getting back to the post, there's a fleet of 2 or 3 DC3's that make the mail-run to Catalina Island about 3 or 4 times a day, so I've seen a DC3 fly, takeoff, or land about a million times over the past 9 years.

I still stop and imagine what a sky full of them must have been like every time I see it...
