Hey SOB. :D Yeah, I'm Dowding in game as well.

The reason you probably haven't seen me is that I've practising my luftwobble tactics ready for the upcoming scenario - i.e. flying at silly altitudes and sneaking the odd kill when my skill and the opportunity converge (not very often).

I saw Toad the other day, but I guess its a timezone thing. Damn the spherical nature of the Earth!

Flying bish as it's the side of choice for my squad, 9 GIAP.

Dowding, you still Dowding in the game?  Haven't seen ya on, but may be a Euro time versus US time thing.  I haven't seen Toad either, but I know he's old and decrepit, and probably is in bed by 6pm.  :D

I've been pretty much on strait through since tour 11 I think.... old age, the memory is the second thing to go  :O

I don't think its "the kids" so much as the "type" of player that has caused the change. In the old days it was mostly WWII buffs. Whether you were hard cord (full historical, fight to live and RTB), or just nostalgic and loved the era, pretty much 99% of the people were on the same page.

Today, due to HTC advertising and trying to get more customers ( which I can't blame them for) you get an influx of people just looking for another game. Those tired of running around with their wizards and elves casting the biggest spell they can buy. They are looking for something different, and in AH2 they find it.

They don't look at the "game" with the same reverence us old timers do. They "spoil" the feel of the game, by "gaming the game" to win at all costs, cutting corners and such. Never slowing down to learn the "proper" way to fly like our old heros use to in the wars.

Not all old timers fly to RTB, but all fly to "take as many with me as I can". That means learning how to survive, and maneuver well enough to spoil the enemies shot. In stead we have the horde flying the planes that go the fastest ( to catch anyone, NOT to run away), and with the biggest guns (to be the first to do the most damage), doggedly chasing down enemies while not caring how many rounds some one is pumping into them from behind. Throwing all caution to the wind as it were, to be the guy the kills the bad guy.

The smart flier these days is the cherry picker, circle above the horde, pick a target and drop in on them. They won't maneuver out of the way (they are too intent on there target), pop them, and zoom climb. It doesn't take the same skill as the old days, there are a lot of easy pickin's out there.

I agree with that. I've been flying the Dora over the last few weeks and I typically arrive above a furball and then just dip in and out of it. I don't kill a spectacular number, but the opportunities are a plenty. I'm just a crap shot at the moment. ;)

Now, Now Guys

I have hit a milestone in my life.  I actually had to have a stress test, and go on BP medicine so I could pass my Class I Flight physical.  Let the young ones flame my arse in a dweeb plane.  I will go on making everones life more pleasant bus driving you guys around.  Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

BTW those that compared my comment about segregating AH veterans from newer pilots to Hitler is sick and demented.  Hope to see you guys in the air.  You all know where I will be if you want.

Part of the cha6nge in "culture" may be, at least in part, due to the steep learning curve involved in the game.

When I stopped flying AW, I was often involved in "missions" I would join up with people capturing bases, fly a gooney sometimes, take some eggs on my 38 for the ack at a base that had troops in bound... etc. etc... You get the idea.

Well I just started flying AH and even with all the years I spent in AW, it's still a challenge in the beginning and so I do none of those things I listed above.

Last night, twice there were people BEGGING for knights to join a mission. A number of different calls went out about base defense. Several times people needed, troops or ords, or what have you. So what did I do you might ask? Well, at first I thought, maybe I should help out.... Then I thought, No I need to keep practicing, and I don't want stop what I'm doing to go help them. Plus I really don't know anyone yet. Yes a few names from the AW days, but for the most part I don't know anyone. So if a "friend" asks me for help, I would have helped, but since it's just a stranger... I just keep on doing my own thing.

In time, I'm sure I'll make plenty of friends... and I'll get back up to speed in my plane... and I'll start becoming more engaged in the types of things that make this a great game... Hopefully a good number of the new players will too.

Best regards,

...and shortly after I post about how much better I seem to be (or how much worse everyone else seems to be), I'm in the arena flying my trusty 51b and run into AKAK in a 38, I don't know what type because I was too busy getting my bellybutton handed to me to notice...not once, but twice.  Always when I've seen a P-38, I'd start to salivate, knowing that I'd soon be dumping lead into that big ugly target before watching it flutter helplessly downward minus it's rear.  Suddenly, they don't look so appealing as targets.

I also ran into a lala (i forget the pilot) that didn't run off, and ended up in a slow and low turn fight with him that seemed to last forever.  I pulled off the kill with a couple of HO/near HO shots, but it could've gone either way.  Left me shaking...that's good stuff!  :)

I am old and decrepit for sure. It is amazing I can even line up a kill anymore the way my hands shake and the way my vision is down to next to nothing.

However, I scratch a few out of the sky now and then by accident and there's always the proxy kills that I get because I can barely see the trees.

If you want to find me, I'll be in MW IF there's a decent fight going on. CV battle and I'm there till some doof sinks the boat and ends the fun. Two close fields with just a couple of opponents is just as good. If it's milkmaid night in the dairy barn though, I will go to LW.

Same deal in LW. I scan both arenas and find one with a CV battle or two close fields going at it and then play in that one until the fight dies out. Then it is back to scouting the 4 arenas for an air battle.

That's how I spend my old age.
