different country questions from a noob
« on: September 22, 2007, 01:08:18 PM »
Hi All,

I am very new at the game (5 weeks) but, must say I am somewhat addicted. Maybe this is a stupid question from a noob and I should shut my pie-hole but, are there large differences in the types of players that make up each team?

I started out with the bishops and found some really great players and learned a lot from them. However, the bulk of the time it just seemed more like a free for all without much tactics or cooperative game play. I have been playing the Janes and other MS combat games for years but, found the multi-player here really makes the game great when people were working together. But, like I said that was few and far between.

I did not even realize you could change sides but, as example after trying to get troops in a Goon and being shot down multiple times I was getting turned off. Even the simplest calls for mutual help or request for a basic report on other fighter status over the town from the myriad of other bishop players there resulted in no more than a big “F” off or other wise comments.

This was just one example that to me, showed a lack of mutual cooperation that seemed par for the course most of the time I was in the game.

I was looking through the help section and came across switching countries. Anyway, I switched to the rooks and it seemed like a different world within 5 minutes. Plenty of mutual cooperation, talk on the radio and way more of a team/ esprit de corps structure.

Is this indicative of the make up of the teams, or was I just playing at off hours (6-9pm est) for the bishops?

I don’t mean to offend anyone (and my apologies upfront if I do) or ruffle feathers, but like I said as a noob my impression is night and day between the sides.

Thanks in advance.

Best thing you can do for yourself is go on tour.  Try all the countries.  Stick with the one where you feel the most comfortable at the times you normally play.

Some will argue that each country displays certain characteristics "overall" because birds of a feather flock together.  But the truth of the matter is, all sides have all kinds, and there are HUGE diifferences in gameplay within the countries depending on which "shift" you play in.

So, again, my advice is to spend a week in each country flying with different groups in each.  You may have had the misfortune of encountering some bad apples when you were in Bishland, and might end up finding others that are more to your liking.

Good luck, and welcome to the game. :aok

Everybody is pretty much the same. The only major differences are the names. Welcome to dweeb hell. :)

In my honest opinion, the rooks are the ones that have the most team work, cooperation, etc, and thats why I fly with them, because I, like you love the teamwork aspect of it all.

I have tried organizing missions and/or trying to get one started for countries, but the rooks are the ones that seem to join up/ do missions the most.

I believe that I got the same amount of check sixes from both the knights and the rooks, so can't really say anything there.  maybe its just cause the rooks have a bit more players, and so can afford to get missions going etc.

Anyway, if you're looking for teamwork and cooperation, get Dred to start a mission (rooks).  Every time he does, our NOE mission falls apart because there's so many people that if you try to stay low, you can't see where you're going.:aok

It all depends on the time of day. Where I live early in the morning is when a majority of "less-skilled" pilots are on. Later on in the day the hordes start to grow. Around 2:00pm is when I see the differences in teams. The bish start running away from fights, nits start upping La-7's alot more often, and rooks start furballin and forget about winning the war :)  . This is just my opinion on teams though.

I just left the Bishops and became a Rook. The Bishes are pretty good at porking airfields but my game isnt porking airfields from 4,000' in bombers. The Bishop missions are for the most part silly and there is very little team play. Ive had bombers shot up while surrounded by friendlies and nobody helped.

                         So anyway Ive been seeing these Rook missions where they fly bombers and fighters the way they are supposed to be flown. So I joined them. My squad always flys Rook anyways.

Find one you're happy with for your reasons. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.
There's more differences within a single country than between them.

In my opinion Knights have fewest players and less country orientated team work.  They seem to be squad bias where captures are concerned.
They do have some good sticks considering their %'age.  No particular shift patten.

Bishops can muster or outnumber but their skill is weak relying on numbers to accomplish captures.  They also have some good sticks but the lowest %'age if all sides were even.  Best shift is late evening / early morning.

Rooks have the highest %'age of all round skills but prefer to dogfight.  Rooks often muster or outnumbers but adapt easily to ENY.  Best shift is morning / afternoon.  Late shift is fighters.

Shifts refer to US time.

Its all explained in Wikipedia:

===
Bishops:
The bishop has no restrictions in distance for each move, but is limited to diagonal movement. Bishops cannot jump over other pieces. A bishop captures by occupying the square on which an enemy piece sits.

Rooks:
The rook moves horizontally or vertically, forward or back, through any number of unoccupied squares, as shown in the diagram below. Like other pieces, it captures by occupying the square on which an enemy piece stands. The rook also participates, along with the king, in a special move called castling

Knights:
The knight move is unusual among chess pieces. When it moves, it can move two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally. The complete move therefore looks like the letter 'L'. Unlike all other standard chess pieces, the knight can 'jump over' all other pawns and pieces ( of either colour) to its destination square. It captures an enemy piece by moving into its square
===

Seems to me that knights are the true furballers :D
