I agree with the "slapping" part, and before you decide to flame me for not agreeing with the prison part please read on.
Most prisons today including the ones we have here in America are simply an isolated village where the inmates get to Exercise, eat (in abundance on our tax dollars), socialize with other inmates frequently, watch TV, have AC and heating.
That's not really punishment. What should be done is to make a prison a working place which in term makes the inmates never want to return to the dreaded place again.
The inmates would have to work for the food they want to eat, this means they plant foods they want to eat and work for any meats they want to receive. Also electricity rights to inmates would be stripped which makes Prison Life more depressing.
Just that small combination would go a long way in straightening someone up and making them realize, "Jail is not the place to be!"
