we didn't have hippies here so I never really interacted with any back in the day.  we didn't have any bikers per se either there was a white trash trailer denizen biker club here that had a brief hey day they were called the outlaws but by the late 1970's the cocaine cowboys which were cubans and colombians for the most part pretty much whipped them and sent them up to northern florida to be tough.

I have no clue what a hippie is but I accuse people of being hippies from time to time and use the term as a slurr.

When I see hippies today, I think the same thing about them as when I see someone dressed up like a cowboy- Why are you dressed like a fool?  The original hippies rebelled against being drafted into the military, against working a boring 9-5 job, and against not being allowed to do drugs.

So I would say that modern-day hippies just dress and act that way for style purposes.  They probably don't have much motivation, and are seeking some type of identity.  Much in the same way as Goths and Grungers.

I lived in San Francisco during the Summer of Love and was a "weekend hippie" but I was only in it for the sex and drugs- the actual philosophy never made much sense to me.

The paradox of the hippie movement was they wanted the freedom to do what they wanted yet depended on society for their welfare. I felt like if you had to depend upon anyone, Gov't or not, for your survival then you weren't free at all- you were a subject of that provider.

We have that "hippie spirit" where I live because marijuana cultivation is legal, and every harvest season we're flooded with migrant hippie-types coming up here to work as trimmers for the pot growers. As a result our social programs are overwhelmed, which illustrates the flaw in that philosophy- we have givers and takers, and that group were takers who, in hindsight, left a small footprint with no real value on America's history.

What makes someone a hippie?

A 2/3 affirmative vote from those present, but not accused.

Hippies are small scale communists.  They believe in communism in a community size, but not larger.

Gowen seeing your profile says your a 16 yr old, im gonna say you do the real hippies disrespect by calling your self one.

Its the wanna be little kid Hippies that give the real hippies a bad name.

im sorry, but i am a hippie, hell, WAVY GRAVY is one of my good friends, im also friends with the daughter of mickey hart (drummer of the greatful dead)

guess what folks? it is sad to say there aren't many "True hippies" in the world anymore, im not saying i am a true hippie, but more like a neo-hippie, sort of like there aren't nazi's anymore, but what people call neo-nazi's. being a hippie isn't a race, it's a culture, just like hip-hop is a culture (a loud obnoxious ho' slappin' culture)

Your good friends with a clown? :)

Wavy Gravy's clown persona grew out of his political activism. Constantly being arrested at demonstrations, he decided he would be less likely to be busted if he dressed as a clown. "Clowns are safe," as he put it.

If you dont smoke weed you cant be a Hippie. While dropping acid isnt necessary smoking weed is. If you dont then your a wannabe Hippie. You really have to go to the west coast to spot real hippies. In the afternoon they can be spotted grazing at vegan restaurants. Actually I'd say Oregon has the most hippies per capita then anywheres else.

In my opinion one of the great counter-culture heros in American history is "The Dude" of "The Big Labowski" fame. Now thats a real hippie. We'd all be better off if we were more like The Dude and practiced dudeism.http://www.dudeism.com/

And just plain chilled out man. Ive always admired Hippies actually.
