It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)

True enough... but sticking a 100HP engine into a scale replica of a Spitfire is like putting a Tubi muffler and a Ferrari body kit on a Pontiac Fiero, in my mind.

Let it be known, however, that I wouldn't be able to afford a replica or a proper Supermarine dweebfire... so don't think I'm just playing rich, internet tough guy.  ;)

Well, actually the aussie Spit26 will give you a similar ROC of a Spit I for instance......
But what stoney said...affordable?
And that Hurricane from Italy? Looked very interesting, wow!

Cute, ain't it? :) It's an ultralight, seats in tandem, the second one is hidden in the fuselage. Yeah, they're not like the real thing, but they can let you dream to be in the real thing, just like our cartoon planes, with the added bonus of being actually flying! ;)

the spitty uses a car engine, not a proper aircraft engine..

The FW190 without a BMW 801 is a D variant - or a Ta152.

 ;)

I love the old biplanes - managed a few hours in a Tiger Moth all too many years ago - and I've seen the SE5a minis a few times at airshows, where their pilots told me they're wonderful fun to fly. Dunno about the Camel though, if its outlook from the cockpit's as restricted as in the original.

I agree to some extent, semi-scale aircraft just do it for me.

The cost of the war-spec engines is prohibitive to say the least but at least companies like FlugWerks (sp?) in Germany are building replicas in full scale with affordable engines... Terribly under-powered, I'm sure, but at least they look the real deal for display purposes.

It's not like one needs to be dogfighting with Mustangs these days.
