Need a career change, any ideas?
« on: May 24, 2008, 01:14:49 AM »
Basically I've been doing IT (customer support desk in 2 NOCC's) for a few years and to say the least I am sick of it.  I've had 6 years managing an automotive repair shop, a couple years in retail management, and odd jobs in between.  Going back to school isn't an option for me right now but I'm at my wits end trying to figure out something else to do.  A fresh and different perspective I think would be helpful.

Any ideas, comments, advice, or suggestions?

I sell beer and wine for United Supermarkets. It's a great gig and a great company. It's not at all where I saw myself winding up, but it's pretty cool none-the-less.

Alternatively, have you considered taking your experience and going into business for yourself? Ultimately that's my goal. I'm not sure I'll ever be happy any other way.

Now this is what I'm talking about, something completely far from my ideas.  I've thought about going into business at one time but ultimately I decided against it.  I'm glad I didn't, it would have been residential IT services and just the thought of that now makes me glad I that I didn't.

I've gone from software testing, mainframe operator to overseeing system operations....and my latest assignment, Help Desk support has been the most fun.  Rather than dealing with machines, patches, installations and the whole hardware aspect, I'm dealing with people.  And while there are a few idiots here and there, I'm enjoying it.  I'm getting to learn more systems we have here and enjoy turning a frantic call into a quick and easy fix.

The con is I'm learning more and more about the clinical side of hospital applications.  I'm not an RN, a Phys. Assistant nor a Doctor...but I have to sit in on the same classes as they do about the latest programs to make their work easier.  How they do what they do...well, bless em...I couldn't.  Just the class on recording fluid intake and output was enough to make me queazy for an hour  LOL

Nirvana, I was navy, just finished up my second tour last Sept. in the reservers.  Ain't no way I'm going back in the military, 4 years active and 6 active reserves is enough for me.  Besides, Coast Guard is minor league, I'm used to playing in the majors (sorry RPM)!

I'm just ready for something DIFFERENT.  Something that I'd like to do for a long, long time.

Who goes out when the Navy hides in port?

Seriously, you should come up here and check out the oilfield jobs. There are stone cold morons making $20 an hour plus company vehicle. I'm just sayin'...
My mind is a raging torrent, flooded with rivulets of thought cascading into a waterfall of creative alternatives.
Stay thirsty my friends.

You know what RPM, when I was in Andrews last November for my mom's funeral my relatives there were saying the same thing about oil company jobs.  My wife loved that part of Texas and that's where my mom's family is from (Denver City really).  Don't think I haven't thought about it.
