anybody know anything about snails (not lusche)
« on: June 26, 2008, 02:07:29 PM »
My family has a fish aquarium and my wife decided that a normal algea eater was not good enough for our tank and she purchased a Golden Snail (Inca Snail) from Petco. Now keep in mind this was back in winter, so it has been a few months. I found what later I discovered was a bundle of eggs but after much research I found several websites that said that type of snail is not capable of reproducing by itself and would need a partner.

What I want to know is. Do snails have their eggs fertilized after they are bundled or are they fertilized before laying or bundling during normal 2 party reproduction. The reason I was wondering was. I now have 2 snails the original one and one the size of a pencil eraser.

If snails fertilize their eggs while still in body/shell then I guess the snail held the sperm cells until a decent enviroment existed (shrugging shoulders not sure about this) or can I expect to see more snails in the future. If it helps I can get a photo of said snail.

I tried posting before in a forum for aquariums and even about snails and fish but no answer there. I just thought I would ask here in case anybody here knows, before calling the pet store and get a halfway answer from somebody who is guessing and trying to make it sound like the truth.

thanks for your help

Rocket Science.....

Yer snail was with puppies when you bought it.

If in the future you sit and watch snails mate...it's a good sign that you need a life.

Just saying.

We've had one single snail lay eggs and reproduce DOZENS of little snails.  Kinda cool.  Kids loved whatching it.

Just making sure the info that recieved from the internet was acurate and whether or not I would need to monitor for over-population. I know this may come as a surprise but not all the information on the internet is reliable.

And just to clear up any misconceptions. I did not watch snails mate. I only had one and felt there was no danger to over-population until now. I also agree with you though anybody who does watch snails mate does indeed need a life either that or they are a sick perv and need therapy.

thanks for incite. Ijust did not think that they would hold onto the eggs that long before depositing them into the "bundle"

and yes Rox my daughter is going to be very excited to see the new member to the tank, but she won't be home until Monday night. Can't wait to see the look on her face.

I've always been told to stay away from snails for algea control. One pleco has always been enough for my tanks, ranging in size from 30-75 gallons.

Our snail depostited 2 seperate egg "bundles" in two seperate plaseic plants.

After a week or so, there we're like 20+ little yellow snails formimg in each bundle.

Not long their after, the bundles started to dizolve away and the little buggers were on their own.

(Sadly, not all of them survive.)

so i guess that means maybe they are capable of reproducing on their own.

I know if this one does not make it my daughter will not be happy, especially after we just had to put down the family dog that grew up along side of her only 1 year apart and my daughter is 9 now. Would be tough explaining that to her. Hopefully we won't have to.

Thanks guys

When I was growing up, we bought some aquatic plants for our tank and stuck to the leaves were a pair of small snails.  They lived for a while.  Until one of our fish got sick and the medicine used to be poured in the tank was toxic to the snails.  So...floating snails in about a day.  Didn't realize it until they had died and I read the fine print on the bottle.

One way to avoid overpopulation is once they start moving around. reachinto the tank and crush the little suckers.
the fish will then eat the remains.

My Uncle used to breed fish for local petshops and thats what he usd to do.

Was pretty cool going over to his house as a kid as his basement was lined wall to wall ceiling ot floor on all 4 walls with fishtanks

ESPECIALLY if you have live plants, their wont be much left of plants if they reproduce.Dreidock has it right, crush them suckers. And watch what medication you use to treat anything which may pop up on your fish..ICk AKA..whitespot..as many medications for this parasite are copper based and copper kills snails.and while I am not worried about the snails dying from copper per se',,if you have quite a few snails in your tank when you treat with copper, they will pollute the tank ,which can kill your fish...

Anyone do live plants in their tanks?I have a 75 gallon with CO2 injection, and my java moss and java fern are getting WAYYYY out of hand, and I hate to just throw it away..I also have a few CRYPT balansae going nuts as well.have some CRYPT wendtii also.
