I've flown it a bit in the past. This is a great plane in the right hands. It is a turn fighter, and can keep up with a Spitfire if used right! All I can tell you is keep flying it and you'll soon find its strengths and weaknesses.

Uhhh... No.

It is not a Japanese P-51.

Think of it as an inferior N1k2, without the quad cannon setup. You don't want to get TOO slow, because it has a nasty stall, but it turns really well until that point.

Unfortunately it's slow as a glacier, climbs worse, and tops out at 15k (after which power drops off horribly).

The Ki-61 is a very nice fighter.  It will turn with a Spit if you know what you're doing.  Keep it in the 200-250 range and it's turn rate is very good.  It's got decent but not spectacular climb rate and speed.  It carries tons of fuel and the 20's have a very high rate of fire and are quite deadly, although they share the poor ballistic qualities of the other Japanese (and Russian) fighters.  The Tony is also one of the better Japanese aircraft in a dive.

If you think of it as an energy turn fighter you'll have success in it.

thats always been your main problem krusty, you can never respect any one else's opinion.

the Ki-61 dives at close to 500 MPH, hold 300+ MPH turns and no other jap plane does that, oh and the fuel last for what seems like forever, if the best fuel loadout is 50% draining the center tank first or the wings first what ever a person feels comfortable with.

Aren't the Ki-61s cannons in the nose and the machine guns in the wings?

Having the cannons in the nose makes for reduced convergence concerns.  I may have to spend some more time in the Ki-61, been upping mostly Japanese fighters lately anyway, might be fun.

This won't be of much help to you but it's a thread I started not long ago on the Ki-61 in the Aircraft and Vehicle forum.  It at least makes some comparisons to other planes and gets other's perspectives as to what it's close to:

I haven't flown the KI-61 in the last year or so, but I did fly it for a whole tour and put it away after that because my elevators would rip off in a steep dive. Maybe they changed the modeling? It used to come no where near a 500mph dive. :salute

If you're interested in learning how to fly the Tony, you should get a hold of Karaya or odege.  Probably two of the better Ki-61 sticks in this game.

You talk of the Tony about as "Factually" as you discuss the State of the Polish Air Force at the start of WWII.    :aok

I am in the Late War Arenas flying the very plane you seek knowledge in.   I would be MORE THAN happy to let you in on some secrets.
