Best book that was turned into the worst movie....

You know.. you read a book that is so great that you can't believe it and then they say they are gonna make a movie of it and you can't wait.. but..  the movie is a HUGE disappointment.

The Great Gatsby.. one of.. if not the greatest American novels.  I have read it 3 or 4 times in my life and got something different every time as I grew.   The sign of a really great novel to me..  it takes me back to a time that I did not live in yet.   you are there.   You can live it.

The movie..  the movie gathered up a whole lot of talent and spent a whole lot of money and..   actually followed the story pretty well... Which made it even more of a disappointment when the movie was so boring and lifeless.

the ultimate proof I suppose that the medias are separate art forms that don't always translate.

Battlefield Earth.

Absolutely fantastic book.  Movie sucked donkey poo.  Course, in the movie's defense, if they did the book justice, the movie would be 10 hours long.

The Great Gatsby was one heck of a book. The move wasn't bad, but didn't get there.
Normally you get disappointed. "The book was better" you know.
I was pleasantly happy with The Lord of the Rings though. There was every chance in the world open to screwing that one up, but IMHO the trilogy was great. The books were better though...
Can't wait for the Hobbit...Del Toro is quite some director.

Watchers by Dean Koontz.

Horrible movie.They even figured a way to slip Corey Feldman into it to make it even worse.

The Stand - Stephen King

I could live with the casting with the exception of Molly Ringwald but the script was horrible, the cinematography looked like is was done in a high school studio, and the script adaptation was reprehensible.

battlefield earth...  watchers...

Great examples...  the stand.. yeah.. but not major leauge bad.

The movie gatsby just didn't have any of the feel of the book at all for me.

I agree with The great Gatsby.. I anticipate The Watchmen will be botched too.  They've already said they've cut out the post-apocalyptic sidestory.

My vote goes to the movie "From Justin to Kelly". The book was WAY better.  :)

Disappointment barely covers the !%@#$@ horrible job they did on this movie.  I always thought this book would have made a great movie, then they %@#$# it up and decided to make @#%@$% sequels .

Starship troopers the movie and the book were two entirely seperate stories.  They shared the same title, and a couple of character names.  Past that it's really difficult to compare two.  I enjoyed both.



As for horrible movies, I'd have to say that Peter Jackson should be hanged for what he did.  Fellowship of the ring was good, The Two Towers was ok, and Return of the King was downright painful to watch.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

But, the more I think about it, that just may be one of those books that simply cannot be done justice on the screen.
