Skuzzy and anyone else are goingto need more information. If your friend has a dual core cpu you can start by reading the stickied posts up top there. I would suggest trying Win98 compatibility mode first but you gave almost nothing to go on.

Once all the above has been done, go into aces high, and delete the video8.cfg file as well - it'll rebuild itself when game starts fella.

Alright, apparently he can't even cache. It just crashes before he can cache. He already checked the requirements page.
I asked if he's missing a driver of some sort and he doesn't believe so. He's got a laptop though:
-Windows Home XP with Service Pack 2
-Intel Pentium M processor 1.70 GHz
-512 MB RAM
-Direct X9.0

Maybe a dodgy download, or something required for the game to run is missing - sound drivers, video wont run it etc etc..........bit brain fried from a day at work.......

Actually, the computer seems to be a laptop that is at the bottom end of the scale.
What video card is in the laptop? If it is an SiS, then the game will not work. If it is certain Intel video chips, it may not work either.

The video card is a ATI Mobility Radeon 7500

That card may not work. If that is the first generation Radeon, it will not run the game. The first generation Radeon cards were a cross between the old Rage3D and 8500 Radeon cards.

hm alright.
but it wasn't always like this, right? He was able to run AH before he had to fix his laptop and it had all the same drivers, hardware etc. as it had before.
I looked it up, apparently it's a second generation card.

Then I need to see a DXDIAG output. I may be thinking of the 7200 or 7000 card.

You say "before"... Before when? Years ago? If you're talking AH1, it had much easier hardware requirements than current AH2 does.

That's true.
Sorry for my vagueness. What I meant was that we used to play three months ago. Perfectly fine. The last time we played, we had the patched-up P-39 updates with the new carriers etc.
I don't know exactly what he's done to his computer now, but it's not running AHII on exactly the same hardware/drivers.

He claims everything's exactly the same but I think he may be missing a driver. DXDIAG? Sorry I need some clarification.

Go to Start, Run, type dxdiag hit enter. You can save the output as a text file, which you can paste (first 1/3rd only really required) here, or email to Skuzzy directly.
