79 mustang was that start :aok

it was the fox chassis. ford built 26(i think) different cars on it. the mustang was on the fox chassis from 79 till 03 or 04 i think,

While the 79 was the first year for the fox platform mustang. The 82 reintroduced the "HO" engine and the GT name plate.
Thats why I believe 82 was a turning point Detroit iron.

You have no idea Txmom. I said "started the HP come back". This car lit the fuse that started the hp wars up again. It was (by most of the mags at the time) almost 1 sec faster through the 1/4 mile than its GM counterparts. It woke GM up and they started building quicker f-bodies.

yes, they did. it took them till the mid/late 90's till they built a camaro or firebird that was comparable price and could outrun the stang.

from 79 till 95 or so, sotck to stock, mustang was only readily beat by 2 american cars. the grand national, and the corvette.
the corvette is a different class, and is/was crazy stupid expensive.

the GN was easy to beat, IF you could get them to race ya without any cooldown time. theyran their best when you let the turbo cool down. the GNX didn't have this problem to the best of my knowledge though.

handling wise, the Fbodies, corvette, and i think even the GN could outturn a mustang...on paper. but the numbers were close enough, that it came down to who was a better driver.

soooo.....just like in the 60's, gm and chrysler are once again copying off of them. :D

you could well be right,

i mostly state 79, as it's the first year of the fox body mustang, and it was also used to pace the indy 500. i think that was more of a wakeup call to gm than the 82gt.

i had an 83 mustang gl, special ordered with a 5.0, 5 speed. it only ran 15'2 in stock trim, but stock camaros were slower. none took me on the track.
when i did the normal bolt ons, she dropped to 13.8@101. similarly modified gm's still were slower. more heavily modified ones obviously were quicker.

My daily driver is a 69 El Camino SS 396.    It is a factory SS big block 4 speed car with air and disc brakes and power steering, and 12 bolt posi.   It was a real optioned out SS car.   I blew up the 396 and so now it runs a 468 and a 6 speed Richmond gear tranny... I dumped the factory air and put in a vintage air system.  I run hotchkiss and bilstein suspension and big rear brakes.  It is being painted right now.

My other "muscle car" is a 55 100 four Healey..  they really were muscle cars for their day..  2100 lbs and they had a huge motor with a four speed overdrive.. they really would do over 100 mph back in 55... I have owned mine for over 30 years..  It has a solid lifter 331 small block chevy in it with 11.5 to 1 pistons and a 750 double pumper.   I run a muncie 4 speed and a narrowed chevy rear in it.   original magnesium (not aluminum) American mags..   the body is ratty and the interior is new.

either a gs or a judge

If it was a Judge it'd have the fender stripes, assuming the car is original.

What do you mean by GS?  A Buick?  Surely not...

It's not a Judge. It is a 68 GTO RAM AIR I.  A 4 speed with 4.33s makes for brisk acceleration.

This is a 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage1, 370hp and 510ft of torque, the most torque of any production muscle car. (678 made in 1970, 124 made in 1971, 44 made in 1972)
If it can't get there on it's own, leave it at home!!
