From Iraq where most guys are into there 3rd and 4th tours and just want to sweet go home??  Moral is low, my friend....
Every person I know who's military is terrified of being deployed there..

A buddy of mine is a seabee (USNR) who got back about six months ago. He looked forward to going.  The only reason he doesn't want to go back is that he takes a financial hit.  His pay grade in the private sector is much better than military pay, and he has a wife and 5 kids to feed.

You can dress up an evil empire in frilly clothes and its still, and always will be, an evil empire. Pragmatism dictates we treat the Russian government as civilized, but it would be stupid to actually believe it.
I would better  see a world dominated by United States ,  not Russia or some Islamic Regime, but i think it's impossible.
There's only one empire in the world , and that's not Russia:....Russia doesn't build military bases in the   US backyard.
I wonder what's going to accomplish U.S  Government beside huge national debt, and budget deficit with this monstrous military spending, new military bases all around the world and in ex soviet states? Fight Al-Quaida? Control and secure oil reserve? Novo Ordo Seclorum?
It's a dangerous game of world domination, and ordinary citizens got nothing to win from it: maybe a draft letter in your mail box.

War with Russia would break the USA.
The last 20+ years of military action in the Middle East has brought them to the brink of bankruptcy.
As soon as the USA pulls their troops out of the Middle East to support a war with Russia the Middle East will explode. Every dollar spent and every bit of ground fought for over there will be forfeited for naught.

Interesting times indeed when Dowding, and I completely agree with Hangtime...

If I was GW I'd be on the phone to Putin telling him in 48 hours F-22's, F-15's, and AWACS will be operating over Georgia with freshly painted Georgian Airforce markings, flown by "volunteer" pilots with fresh Georgian passports all paid for by a new "lend lease agreement" splashing every Russki bird that ventures south until they withdraw.

Just don't tell Putin, let it be a surprise. When he pops a vein over aircraft losses to American built fighters.....tell him then that all those planes are flown by volunteers, just like the MiGs over MiG Alley in Korea.

I seriously doubt that the TOPOL-M missile is some sort of super weapon. It's not uncommon at all for military hardware to either not live up to it's hype, or to be over hyped intentionally for the benefit of potential enemies. The MiG-25 comes to mind......

Surviving a Nuclear blast? Something about that makes me think bullpucky.

MOSCOW - Russian news reports are quoting President Dmitri Medvedev ordering a halt to Russian military action in Georgia.

Medvedev says in a statement carried by Russian news agencies that the Russian action has punished Georgia and restored security for civilians and Russian peacekeepers in South Ossetia. At the same time he ordered the military Tuesday to quell any Georgian armed resistance that appears.

Did Medved just torpedo Putin in the bow? i mean Medved comes out like a frigging hero while Putin looks like Satan himself.

Anodizer, you keep harping on "low morale". I don't know a single member of the military that suffers from it. And I know a fairly large number of them. They ALL want to go home. But they all want to finish the job. They're just like anyone else away from home doing a job. They want to finish the job and go home. Their morale is not so low as you try to proclaim. Re-enlistment is up, as well as enlistment.

By the way, the way this operation would be done, if it were to be done, would be the way it has been planned for decades. It would NOT be an armor v. armor battle, nor an infantry v. infantry battle, nor a combination. Air superiority would be established quickly, and the A-10's, helicopters, and other attack aircraft would be sent in to deal with the armor. Then, for the most part, the naked infantry would retreat on its own.
