I agree that Russia isn't likely to attempt an assault on the Georgian capitol with US troops there. The fallout from all this remains to be seen. Russia isn't the only country playing this game, there will be counter moves.

1) That does us no good, we can't read Russian.

12 Year Old Girl Tells the Truth on Fox News about Georgia. Fox News even had to cut them off right in the middle of the account of Georgian aggression even though they had just come from a commercial break 2 minutes prior to that.

No chance whatsoever that the folks that screen those interviewed were lied to so they could go on TV and trumpet their political views.  It happens quite frequently.  I'm still trying to find an unpartial source that describes how this initial Georgian incursion began...Right now, I don't even think that is very clear...

Not unlike the introduction of Pershing Missiles into Western Europe back in the 80's.  Highly unpopular, and yet, proved to be effective.  But, ultimately, doesn't bear upon the issue at hand.

Nils, we're far more anti-bush here than you might think; everything the monkey does is suspect... and I've been wondering about bush's motives in a number of foreign confrontations as of late.. there's been murmurs amounting to 'Bush won't leave office... some 'crisis' in the closing days of his presidency will 'force' him to cancel the elections'...

The coming days are worrisome, this BS little tussle in Georgia could easily be manipulated into something entirely more menacing. We wonder if putin understands just how much fire he's fooling with?

Meanwhile, we watch, comment, wait... and we remain hopeful (but not convinced) this will cool down to the usual level of animosity between east and west that we are used to. If I was a european, I'd be mighty active trying to convince the russki's "you REALLY don't wanna mess with that nutjob in the white house.."

Thats like saying deploying a brand new aircraft is provoking the Russians. The missiles are for defense only, the Russians are only being provoked because they want to be provoked.

Same yet different. In the 80s it was a cold war going and nato buildt up against the soviet union and vice versa.

After the collapse of the soviet union, Nato has continued to grow and is getting closer to russia every year. Imagine how the US would feel if Soviet had won the cold war and most of your surrounding neighbours were getting inducted into the Soviet union by the year. Placing missile shields and whatnot closer and closer. Would you be getting desperate and feel squeezed more and more or just shrug it off with a smile?

My personal opinion after beeing a Nato advocate my entire life is that Nato should have been disbanded after the collapse of the Soviet union. I may be alone in feeling this here but i dont mind that :)
