Car lovers
« on: August 16, 2008, 06:03:38 PM »
I know there is a few of you who enjoy muscle/classic cars, and i wanted to share the main reason why i haven't played or posted in some time. My father came across an old mustang a few years ago, and let it sit since then. I in turn convinced him to sell it to me, and I've been restoring her since late January.

1966 Ford Mustang, 'A' code 289 V8, power steering, vinyl top, standard interior.

For some dumb reason, I didn't take pics of her when she arrived. However, here is a pic I found very similar to what the engine looked like.

Here is what it looks like (for the most part)

And here's a few more pics

I'm almost done, just waiting for my seats & I will be replacing the brakes & master cylinder soon...
But so far, I've replaced all chrome (minus the bumpers), new interior, cleaned & painted most parts, stainless steel fasteners, added MSD ignition, monte carlo bar, new vinyl top, aluminum radiator, aluminum water pump, 100amp alternator, and electroilluminecent gauges.

Anyone else restoring?

I don't know if you would call it a restoration, but I have a 1976 Comet that I am putting back in to shape. It is like the guy I bought it from took the whole car apart and put it back together finger tight.... I am up to the point where mechanically it is reliable, and am now starting the cosmetic stuff.

I almost bought a 1968 Mustang Fastback in 1998.   The wife was taken to North West Ohio on a spur of the moment Friday cruise.   I get there and it is in good shape (only needed new vinyl seat surfaces and shag carpeting removed from the lower interior door panels).    The major thing was the slightly faded Highland Green paint from about 1973 (when I was born).   I'd have repainted it Highland Green or it's Original Color.

Only gripes were no original wheels, or original 289.   Someone threw in a 351C that needed "dressing".

He was stuck on $9000 FIRM.   Ok, I bust out $4500 right there and say "I'll get the rest tomorrow".   He replies "A guy down the road gave me $100 last night as a deposit."   He even said "I'm not sure if he'll buy it."    He knew where I drove from and conveyed this with a look that singed the back of his head and walked away chuckling.

Maybe one day I'll have a 68 Fastback.   Right now it'll be a dream.   But I pop wood when I see one in Highland Green, it is the most beautiful color ever placed on an car.

Seraph, good job so far.   Interior looks like it's chugging along.

I always wondered why people don't like the door guards, I personally like 'em. Besides, they are original to the car, I'm not making any mods to the body... I also haven't seen any other mustang with them.

Mash, I hope you find your fastback, i know they are hard to find.

Keep the guards.  Even if you take em off, wrap them in bubble wrap.   Crap like that is getting tougher to come by (I'll also assume those are OEM).   A good website for this kind of stuff is:  http://www.mustangdepot.com/    My buddy used them on his 2+2 resto.

Couple quick questions.   Is Wimbledon White the Original Color?   If not, you gonna take it to it's O.C.?

Here's something for you that I have in one of my folders on my HD:

Almost everything on this car is original, all emblems & trim, with the exception of  the front sheet metal (it was in an accident some time ago), but all of the repair was from an original 65. I took all the trim & engine parts I'm not using and put it in storage (even all the hardware). But, yes, Winbledon white is the original color, after taking the interior apart, it's plain too see there was only one paint job afterwards.

I've seen mustang depot, but I found it too late, most of my resto stuff came fom mustangs unlimited, but also from ebay (found an original grill emblem for 30bucks).

I've been keeping it mostly original, just what I call a mild custom (like the stainless fasteners), and will keep it the white when I can affort the paint job.

Good for you man.   Wasn't trying to be nosy or anything.  Just know that if I lived in the vicinity, I'd be pissing my wife off by lending a hand.   I may be only 35, but I love old cars.

THOSE Door guards are not OE to the best of my knowledge. i've never seen a 60's mustang come through with them. they look fine though, and if you like them, then there is absolutley no reason to remove them.

the only things i see that i might do differently, would be to put a stock steering wheel back in....but again, if you like it, definitly keep it!

and then that radiator. it looks like an aftermarket aluminum radiator. notice you can see it through the grill? i'd get some hi-temp semigloss black, and paint it to match the rest of the underhood.

that is a beautiful car though!! excellent job!!

i forgot too.........

if you still have the original seats, you can normally find the original build sheet. it's usually put under the passengers side front seat, or under the rear seat. they tucked them into the support springs under there.

I can't say for sure the guards are oem, I don't have the original paperwork. A friend's father owns a mustang shop though, and confirms it was an option back then. Good note on the radiator, I didn't even think of that.
We are going with an original wheel, it's just that they are a bit pricy, cash is a little short right now...
Most of the work is cleaning 40+ years of dirt and grime, then painting with the high temp stuff.

I'm not sure that build sheet is existant anymore, the seats are a bit, well, falling apart. I have a professional upholsterer in the family, so I'm waiting on those right now, and I'll check for it.

Thanks for the comments cap!
