Yes, it is. Even someone like me who is not familiar with modern armor can clearly see that.
And? :huh

You know that just because it's name may not be anywhere close to 'T72' doesn't mean it's not a variant or foreign copy of a T72 right? Because that definitely looks like a variant of foreign copy of the T72.
(Image removed from quote.)

It's a T-84. A development of the T-80U. The T-72 is from a completely different family of Russian tanks than the T-84. Saying it's a version of the T-72 just because it's Russian is like saying the M1 Abrams is a version of the M60A3, just because both are American.

There are two distinct lines of Russian tanks. One started with the T-55 and includes the T-62, T-72 and T-90. The other line started with the T-64 and includes the T-80 and T-84. Besides having the same armament the two lines have little in common. In fact the M1 Abrams and the German Leopard 2 have far more in common than the T-72 and T-80.

- The T-84 is actually Ukrainian, not Russian.

Which Ausf. is it then? It is clearly not a G since it doesnt have the heavy-duty front tow mount and the superstructure is of the early type. Must be an A or pre-production D?
