I'm looking forward to the movie. I've seen all the others.
Now to get all supa geeky....
The original series was pretty good for the most part, a few episodes were horrible though, but overall I like it... but its really hard to compare it to all the other series. Even considering the movies, the original series and Star Trek in general would not have near the popularity it enjoys to this day if it weren't for The Next Generation. Shatner and company owe a lot to the Enterprise-D.
But.... TNG had some real, real bad episodes. Particularly in Seasons 1-4. The first four seasons were a crapshoot, with some really good episodes mixed with a lot of mediocrity mixed with some really bad episodes. Only in the last three seasons did the show get consistently good, particularly with the Klingon succession, Worf, Data, and Borg storylines.
But overall I liked Deep Space Nine the best. Compared to TNG, I thought DSN was much more consistently good. (Plus it happens to have my favorite all-time Star Trek episode of any series, but that's another story.) TNG had a bit higher highs, but much lower lows, leaving DSN as the overall winner. Other than O'Brian's wife and Sisko's girlfriend, I liked every single character on the show, which I can't say about any of the other series (other than TOS I suppose). For every flaw the series had, and they are many, I could counter with a TNG flaw that is twice as bad, and TNG is the only ST series that is even close to as good.
In particular, I thought the Story of Worf was excellent. Worf's development as a, well, humanoid, is practically unparalleled on any show on TV. One day I plan on figuring out all the episodes from TNG and DSN that are "Worf" episodes and watching them in long marathon of Worfy goodness, lol.
Voyager... well that series was OK. A lot to dislike, and some to like, in it. I agree that it was time for a female captain, but Janeway shouldn't have been it. I'm only surprised they didn't actually have her cry on the screen when someone "disappointed" her. The stupid "morale" officer whose name I've mentally blocked needed to be airlocked in the second episode. The rest of the crew was good but not great. Seven was an obvious, desperate move for ratings... but strangely it was a good move. She added some needed eyecandy and better yet, and the actress actually did a real good job of staying in character, and in a way saved the series.
The worst thing about Voyager was that they almost blew the ship up every damn episode, escaping by 0.296% each time, long enough to repair and get underway again next week. Gimme a break people, the whole idea of a disaster not happening is backups for your backups, not relying on rolling the hard six every time. It just got unbelievable after a while. Once they really got to the Borg ending of the series, it was at its best. But its not near as good as TNG or DSN.
Enterprise is sub-par. I've only bothered to watch maybe 10-15 episodes, whereas I've seen every episode of the other series, most of them multiple times. Again, Archer sucks. I knew he would suck before I even watched one episode, just based on Quantum Leap. Not a lot to say other than it would have been better if the Enterprise series was never done.
Back to the Captain thing... Kirk was a great captain. Picard was a great captain, I would argue the best. Sisko was a so so commander that eventually became a great captain. Spock, Riker and Sulu even had the right stuff the couple times they were shown in the captain's chair. But Janeway and Archer both sucked and it hurt their respective shows.
The good news? The guys that started their careers on Star Trek (but not onscreen) have learned their lessons and now are doing new better shows, like Battlestar Galactica. BSG improves on Star Trek in every conceivable way, even though its made by some Trek veterans. They know why Star Trek was good and why it was bad, and that's why BSG is just awesome.
I'm not sure that applies to the movie though. I'll be hoping for the best but am not going to go in with any pre-conceived ideas that the movie is going to suck or that its going to be great. To me, it'll be what it actually is when I see it.
