Are Our Air-to-Ground Rockets Somewhat...'Meh'..?
« on: May 03, 2009, 04:58:10 PM »
Just wondering if anyone had any accounts of what kind of damage a 5" rocket or equivalent would do to a GV in WWII?  I find them quite a bit lackluster vs even soft-skinned gv's...

Thanks!

I did find a reference to the 60 pound semi-armour-piercing (SAP) head being capable of knocking turrets off tanks...that was the 6" 27kg warhead the RAF used.

I was told that the rockets in FA did damage against tanks...

I got a kill on a panzer a while back with a rocket. I hit the top of the turret with it.I don't know if the panzer already had damaged though. I was really surprised when it killed it but hey I am not complaining lol.

I have killed GV's with them but I shoot them in three's, but the only tank was the panzer never any of the others. But i track all GV's at will.....

I have only managed one time to kill a Tiger firing all six rockets from a P-51d.

They are very lethal if they hit.  They are very hard to hit with.  The same rockets in WWII had a 1-2% hit rate.  They were also only lethal if they hit.  They were hard to hit with.

Seems fine to me.

http://files.filefront.com/pnz+F6+rockets+1223ahf/;13705443;/fileinfo.html

when fired at 45 degree to turret from high.
fire salvo 3 on any moving hard skin gv...tracks or kills
fire salvo 5 or 6 on stationary gv....goes boom
fire salvo 1 on jeeps or m3, m16, m8 or PT's

Use f6f or f4u or p47....can use P38 but wing span is wider.

Rockets fire straight.....no convergence.

hard skin Gv's fire at 400...on the pipper
soft skin Gv's 800 to 600
PT 1,000 to 800 ...compensate for drop

Tiffy rockets are very hard to aim....they drop off quick

190 rockets reported to be lethal but I have never used them so can't comment.

my greatest feat with a rocket:

I was defending a port, I had an F4U, I see an LVT, after killing one already with some rockets, I had 3 or 4 left, I shoot  and I hit it, the rocket bounced up and hit me and killed me.  :lol

I used to see that happen a lot...never been killed by my own rocket before but close.

I've been killed by and tracked by rockets before.  It is always very impressive to be killed that way.

RE: HE stuff "bouncing":  Shouldn't it explode when it hits?  Did it tumble?  I was shelling a carrier with a tank one night and saw the occasional HE round go bounding off the flight deck.  I assume it is hitting nose down since it went up first....

I killed a panzer with a F4U-1D rocket, I'm pretty sure I got a direct hit to the butt on it.

I find the the P-38L & F6F is fairly accurate and there doesn't seem to be the excessive drop like in the F4U's or P-47's. And that just might be me,  now the P-38J rockets or the most accurate IMO.

I use thous on bombers, very easy to aim them.
