So I'm underway on Patrol 3. December 6, 1939.
I find a convoy South East of Rockall Bank and proceeded to attack. Near Dawn I sink a a South Hampton Light Cruiser that was tucked away in the heart of the convoy. 3 of 4 Eels hit and sink the 10000T Cruiser from 600m. I then sink a light freighter with my Stern tube a few seconds later. I reload tube 1 and as it finishes up I target a large 6000T merchant. I keep checking for the Black Swan Frigate that was leading the convoy and just like movies I turn my periscope a little more and there it is bearing down on me. I crash dived away barely avoiding the Frigate, Depth Charges explode all around.
I manage to sneak away after about an hour of attacks, but not before my Port Propeller is destroyed. I can not recharge my batteries without sitting on the surface dead in the water but I manage to recharge them. I make my way NNE at a max of 14 knots to try and catch the slow moving convoy again. So I save the game and load it up again last evening. After two days of sailing at accelerated time, I make contact with the convoy again, this time its Mid afternoon, skies were clear and the sea was like a mirror.
Off in the distance I see a J class destroyer, I also see the smoke from the convoy ships. I turned towards the ships but I must of gotten too close. 5 inch shells explode in the water all around me, and I Crash Dive. My attack is botched and I dive to 180m, just a few meters from the sea floor.
I was attacked by 2 J Class Destroyers for nearly 5 real life hours. 5 hours pales in comparison to real life attacks on uboats in WW2, but I was really exhausted afterwords. The explosions and damage caused me to collide with sea floor. I had severe flooding in my Stern Torpedo Room and both my deck and flak gun were destroyed in the attack. All my sailors are exhausted and
I had to do some crazy crew management to limp out of there at 1 kt.
I started playing at 5pm real time, and finally was able to surface and save my game just past Midnight. I'm debating whether I should go home or continue the hunt as banged up as I am.
What a great game, it surely has matured since it first came out years ago.
