Just make sure you're on a 32 bit system before buying SH3. Won't handle 64 bit Windows (unless someone has found a workaround for it).

GWX is great, but there are other mods too that improve the game a lot. The resolution fix allows you to set resolutions higher than 1024x768 and there is a wide screen fix too. There's a ton of excellent skins for your Boot, and other visual improvements. The Subsim forums is the place to look.

This tread made me want to try it...
Now I have to dig up my SHIII install and make room for it on the HD. Amazingly this game runs flawlessly on my on-board intel graphics. I remember it had graphic compatibility issues with my desktop and fancy nvidia card when it came out.

the graphics on SHIV are much more cpu intensive then. The only thing that attracts me to III is the U-boats factor. Cooler to be a u-boat in the atlantic than allied sub in the pacific. Visualy SHIV is hard to step down from, the lighting and water, ship damage also, all vastly improved in IV.
And I don't know much, but I do know this. With a golden heart comes a rebel fist.

GWX 3.0 has improved, reflective water and improved atmospherics.

Most ports have increased buildings and shipping, so it becomes pretty graphics intensive around those areas.
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Good thing that I spend most of the time in the empty vastness of the atlantic :)

I do feel a slowdown when I near a convoy.

Everyone does, since it only caches things when they're needed. Whenever you near a port or a convoy it suddenly dumps all of the resources into RAM, which kills everything else while it's going about it.

I use the program End it All, it seems to help on load times.

Also, I returned safely from Patrol 3. Not the greatest haul, but home in one piece.

The stupid save engine doesn't save whether a ship has contact with you or not, so when i re-loaded that game the Clemson happily Flanked back toward the convoy and ate two of my torpedos. Surfaced and sank three medium cargo ships and heavily wounded another before a corvette got a little too close with his salvos. Crash dove and ran away with two Destroyers, four cargo vessels, and a trawler in the bag.

Never save in a battle, and be at least 50 miles from any port, known contact or sunk ship.
