5 Inch Guns
« on: June 22, 2009, 08:00:11 AM »
The 5 Inchers are fun for sure but people seem to get way too many kills too easily in them for reality.

I wouldnt necessarily change anything mind but I also think they are unrealistically effective. Maybe the planes fly too close to the ships but how often can you kill a flight of 3 bombers easily or a fighter which is constantly changing height speed and direction?

I agree that 5" guns are to accurate, however if you do keep changing altitude, speed and heading (as you said) they do not hit you.

I have to laugh at this.....

After taking multiple hits while engaged in a good (high speed) TnB I disagree completely.

There is no accuracy needed when it comes to the 5 inchers ... the shells use proximity fuses ... THE SHELL DOES NOT HAVE TO DIRECTLY HIT THE TARGET ... the target just has to be within the range that triggers the fuse and the shrapnel will definitely ruin your day.

Manned twin 5 inch guns shooting at the firing rate that we have on the CV equals certain death for low level bombers or fighters.

I was talking about making turns to avoid the AAA, I never said it would not hit you when your fighting someone.

Umm....wouldnt turning in a fight be the same thing as a turn to avoid AAA?

Or is that not changing speed, altitude and direction?

when your turn-fighting your pretty much circling in one spot. Have you ever made a high speed dive on a zero that sow you and made a really tight turn, but you still kill him because that tight turn left him in the same spot. So the same thing if you just keep circling around  AAA, it will hit you, but if you are flying "straight" and making zig-zags the auto AAA will not hit you.

You obviously fail to get it....

Dodging AAA doesnt work...I take more its in fighter than I do in lumbering buffs.

If the 5in shells hve proximity fuses then there is nothing you can do about it if you fly too close to a ship packing one of those. Besides I doubt the gunners are personaly trying to hit YOU, they are probably just aiming at the first aircraft that catches their eye.

Don't it just? One time I swear this gunner was aiming at me and I was one of the 4 aircraft or so that COULD'T damage his ship. I swear to god, he was aiming at me, I could even see his gun turret traversing to follow me.
