Problems building new rig-

I bought parts for a new rig, they showed up, and I assembled them.  At the end, I powered it up and...  nothing.  No apparant power to the board.  Is it possible I have something hooked up wrong?  Or more likely the board is dead?

I should mention that this is the second try.  This same exact thing happened two weeks ago, and I sent the board back to be replaced.  New board arrives, same problem...  I tried the Pwr supply in a different box, and it works.

How should I trouble-shoot this?

Double check your connections...you might have a 12v connector in the wrong place.

PSU might not have the proper amount of power for the board as well.

If you have a digital camera, take a photo of your motherboard with everything plugged in and post it here.

Here are pictures.  I've disconnected everything but the MB and PWR Supply here.  Plugged in, power on, all is silent.  No sounds, no LEDs.  Both the main and 8-pin power are connected to the board.




Memory is in slot 1 and 3, does that matter?

Your missing the connection that goes to that 8 pin 12v power connector between the power supply and the blue heat sink that read "ultra durable"...or I'm just not seeing the power cable going to it in the pics.

Nope, the 8-pin is connected.  That one and the real big one, and that's it at this point.

Yes, Read your MB manual, but keep one in your slot closest to CPU (but, just verify as it might vary from manufacturer).   My guess is a dead MB (possibly bad DIMM slot).   Again, not diagnosing it, just going on what you've posted.

OK, tried that, no luck.  Tried both sticks seperately, in the number-1 slot, which is the one closest to the CPU.

Pull on the power connections a tad to see if they are in. Check your I/O switch on the back of the computer.


Addendum: make sure the notches of your power cables are lined up. That 24pin cable looks tilted from here. (abeit hard to see).

That should have kicked off the mobo and caused some sort of error...but then some dual channel mobos won't power up at all without 2 chips in.

Is it possible the cpu isn't in the socket properly???

He tried the PSU in another box and it powered up...could be a short in there somewhere...maybe the capstands aren't positioned properly and the board is grounded against the case?

Did you disconnect the wire for the power switch (and the rest of the front panel?) in order to take the pictures?  There should be wires connected to the F_PANEL - pins 6 & 8 of which are the power switch connector.

Also, you should plug in the case speaker (which also plugs in to the F_PANEL connector) so that you can here if it's beeping.

According to the manual, a single memory module should be fine - so either alone should be fine.  Also, normally you can expect most boards to power up (and then beep) without any memory modules - in which case you can tell that they are the problem when it won't start up if they are installed.
