Increase MG/FF ammo load on 190A-5
« on: September 03, 2009, 08:15:46 PM »
You all know my 190A8 wishlist (fix the weights), but I've wanted this ammo increase on the A-5 for a while.

The Fw190A-5 carried 90 rounds per gun for the outboard MGFF cannons. Note this wasn't an option during the BOB, so it doesn't apply to our 109E-4.

However, the ammo canister was changed (repacked) later on to allow 90 rounds in the same space.

Lately I ran across some actual references (and a couple just today) so I thought I'd post a wish.

Tony Williams, in response to a question about when the 90-round drums came out (posted April 2007 on ww2aircraft.net)

Mid-war, I think - the drum was physically the same size as the 60-rounder, but packed more tightly. They also introduced a small 30-round drum for use in flexibly-mounted guns. And there was an electrically-powered belt feed for night fighters.

As an FYI the 90-round drums were retro-fitted to most 190s once they came out, so even earlier version still flying would have used them. I'm not sure about later-model 109Es (E-7, for example).

So, I'd like to request that HTC up the ammo load from 60rpg to 90 on this particular plane. I take the outboard guns in the A-5 99% of the time, and personally would love to have a little more ammo in them.

On with the links!

Climb and speed charts showing a 190A-5 loaded out with 2x MG17 (900 rpg) 2x MG151/20 (250 rpg) and 2x MGFF (90 rpg) dated October '43:

And in general a bunch of links specifying how the ammo was increased to 90 rounds per gun later (varrying degress of specificity):

The last one supposedly from a book published in 1943, and the scanned images look the part.
