Question:

What good does smoke do now besides marking, or obscuring targets depending, and the various other uses players have come up with? What did HTC put it in for?

only purpose for smoke is to obscure targets,  I can easy sink a cv from 5.5k I(I never go higher than that) altitude turning or not about 95%.  a little smoke would make it a little more challenging.  same for the shore battery, it will be harder to hi the cv.  and what about once the cv is sunk its too easy to sink all the bunch of pt boats that suddenly appear. imagine 5 or 6 pt boats poping smoke.  now that would be a challenge  :).

Thanks crasher. I was just wondering if smoke reduced icon range, or made it a neutral icon, or some crap like that. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Smoke that's thick enough will obscure an icon, too. Just like how clouds work, though you don't see many of those in the MAs any more either.

No joking about the clouds, once last year i think, I kept looking for the cv in my b24's, damn clouds were at 3 or 4k so I could see nothing, I knew i was close because of the puffy ack, but I never did see the cv.  I ended up running out of gas.  pt boat smoke would be a great ides :)

On the point of the fact that the smoke contains hydrochloric acid (the very same chemical that is found in your stomach)  I think that it should inflcit a pilot wound if you are in it for more than thrre seconds, and sxi seconds would be lethal.

On a serious note, I don't think it would be in a high enough concentration to melt you...though it couldn't be comfortable.
