Ever consider what those balloons would do to frame rates for 50% of AH Pilots?

maybe ah can hire those guys that do south park, pretty sure they would have some ideas to improve the frame rate.

Where did you get the idea that animators working with $100,000+ equipment would have the knowledge to increase the eye-candy while reducing the hardware requirements? :huh

Absolutely nothing...

The game currently allows something like this to be done, they would be fixed position tho.

They would HAVE to be destroyable though. That means each one would have to be updated for each and every player, every time one of them takes a couple of 20mm rounds in a dogfight.

if the ballons are made out of rubber, wont the bullet/cannon rounds bounce and kill the attacker?

Well 20mm shells are explosive, some of them anyway, so no. It would explode, and blow a hole in the ballon, and the .50's and even 303's, 7.62mm, and .30's would punch right through (they go through the metal skins on our plane, and if the rubber were thick enough to stop it, then we would have bouncy balls.

The game doesn't work like that....

Do you think it would be any different than a hangar or ack?

Your plane doesn't know the status of every flak in the game at all times.

Well no, I worded that poorly. I mean every one within whatever range the update is sent out to (I guess that would be what would happen). And there wouldn't be only 5-6 barrage ballons. There would be probably like 20 all at varying alts. That would still be enough to serisouly affect players using borderline machines.

Uhm, it's not as easy as it sounds. Balloons (not dirigibles) are not rigid. This means they rely on the gas within the balloon along with any lines or guidewires to generate the form of the balloon. What does that mean? Quite simple, anything impacting the balloon will practically bounce off. It's basically a suspended bounce-ball.

Although suicide, when pilots of WWI attacked balloons there's a reason they used specialised ammunition.

The physics of a bullet impacting a balloon are quite simple, the bullet wins.  Even regular ball ammo will take down a balloon given sufficient time. In practice unless the bullets set the balloon ablaze it was simply winched down and repaired.

HE or incendiary bullets were used to set the fabric on fire, usually meaning its complete destruction.

The primary danger to the attacker was from neighboring flak installations, not the balloon itself.
