Xbox 360
« on: September 24, 2009, 07:40:41 PM »
I've had it for about 2 and a half years now, it got the red rings about 3 times now. the first time, it just went by. The second time i did the penny fix and it worked for a month, yesterday i had done the towel trick to reset the chips (or so they say that's what it does) and with the penny fix already there i decided it was a good thing to do. Well, it worked, for a day. Today it got the red rings for the third time, im going to let cool (it's not even warm) to see if it will work.  :cry

Any tips or suggestions to fix it or a cooling system?

I just want it to work a little bit more, a month or more. Maybe permanent...

Well, it depends, do you have the 360 or the elite?

The arcade version, my first one (Original 360 - Not arcade or Elite) died with the E74 error.

:/ May want to contact the company and see what they can do. I know that when a friend of mines elite red ringed, they replaced it for the price of shipping...

Contacted them, they wanted $150 for repairs so i decided to do the penny fix. I MODDED the xbox. Can't send it now, and it would have been a rip off. I just want a temporary solution for the rumored new to come model.

If you never sent it into Microsux after it happend those three times, you should contact them and see if you can send it in.  You should still be under the warranty period since Microsux extended the warranty for 3 years.

Alternatively, you can go to a site like this that claims to sell a guide and video that walk you step by step in how to fix the red ring of death.

Good luck.

There is a fix out there on the internet that I did on my son's 360 that worked a charm.  It involves removing the heat sink from the processor and reattaching it with new thermal compound and bolts/nuts instead of the cheesy clips that currently hold it in place.  Apparently the cheesy clips expand and contract with the heat and eventually loosen up the heatsink to where it is ineffective.  I don't have the link on me, but I'm sure some Googling would pull it up.

The problem with the xBox lies in the lead-free "environmentally friendly" solder that Microsoft used. Due to not containing lead, the properties of the solder changed. For one, it's very brittle and the condition worsens with every heating/cooling cycle. The "towel trick" only works because it literally re-melts the solder and "resolders" the entire system. Obviously, doing this multiple times is detrimental.

Absolutely ANYTHING you can do to keep the system cool will help it along. The RRoD comes from the solder heating up and losing contact 99% of the time. Personally, if mine ever does it (and it hasn't for at least 1.5 years now, maybe 2), I'll be taking it into the shop at school where they have the spiffy soldering equipment and redoing each contact I can get to with leaded solder. Because I'm bored like that. :D

Cost about $5 in bolts/nuts/washers from Home Depot and one tube of thermal compound.

OOZ662, from the research I did the towel trick wasn't to heat the system up enough to remelt the solder.  It was supposed to reset the system and allow it to boot again until the error occurs again.  My understanding is that the red rings are a cooling issue and not a soldering problem the majority of the time.

I dunno what would reset other than the physical location of the solder...hmm. I got all that from a discussion of techies following the posting of one of the heatsink replacing videos...after they got done drolling over the fine girl and her pretty hands, that is. :D

Could always do what someone told me about.  Go to Walmart and buy a new unit.  Pull the guts and swap with the guts you have now.  Take new case and old guts back to Walmart and return as non-working unit for cash back.  Not really ethical, but it is an option.   :devil
