I agree with everything except for the armament comment. Even though you may argue on paper that six .50s = four.50s and one 20mm,

On paper the P-38 has more firepower than any 6x.50 cal armed fighter.  1 HS 20mm is approximately equal to a little more than 3x.50 cal.

With equal pilots, starting at an even altitude at their max speeds for that altitude the F4U-4 should win almost every time. Of course no two pilots are equal or always flying at the top of their game so this changes rapidly when you take it off paper and apply it into the game itself.

Tough thing about the Hog, especially the -4, is that there really IS no one way to fight it.
Yeah what i do is get the hog slow with it's flaps out.  Then start the fight vertical.

That's REALLY dicey against a -4.
Ron White says you can't fix stupid. I beg to differ. Stupid will usually sort itself out, it's just a matter of making sure you're not close enough to become collateral damage.

Anytime anywhere ACE...I would like to have a shot at this one; even with me just having started back into AH I really think I could make a dent into your 38 more times than not.

I don't know anyone who thinks the P-38 is better than a -4.

You better hope that you have a lot more energy than he does if you try.

Yep.

I understand exactly what you said. The :huh was about the fact that it's entirely irrelevant and, last I checked, not an F4U-4 or P-38L.

There are pretty much two cults saying that each plane is better than the other. Well which is it? Now its time for you to vote on it :aok.

it depends on who is flying what.

With equal pilots, the F4U-4 wins >90% of the time.

if i'm not mistaken. the p38 was designed as a pursuit plane, or an interceptor. it's intention(i think) was to escort bombers, defend them, and chase down bad guy bombers.

the corsair was designed as a fighter plane. it was built to turnfight.
