That is a very tacky question.  The answer isn't any of your business, either.

There is nothing stopping me or anyone else from purchasing any of the airplanes we're talking about.  There are however significant obstacles in getting a Flanker or Fulcrum flying when compared to the other jets referred to.

Personally I think a Folland Gnat would be two scoops of fun.

In accordance with FAA Order 8130.2 the aircraft would be certificated as an Experimental Exhibition.

Former military aircraft should be demilitarized prior to application for airworthiness certification. It is not possible to define what the final configuration of these aircraft will be following this demilitarization. Therefore, because the demilitarization process most likely will involve a change to the aircraft configuration, FAA representatives should not consider an application for airworthiness certification unless demilitarization has been completed.

It is the policy of the DOD that surplus U.S. military property designated as arms, ammunition, implements of war, and other military items will be demilitarized to the extent necessary to preclude the unauthorized use of these military items.

Former military aircraft imported from any other country require an import permit issued by the Department of the Treasury, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). This permit is granted by the ATF using ATF Form 6, Application and Permit for Importation of Firearms, Ammunition, and Implements of War. In addition, these former military aircraft are required to be demilitarized in order to clear U.S. Customs. Compliance with demilitarization is evidenced by a completed ATF Form 6A, Release and Receipt of Imported Firearms, Ammunition, and Implements of War. Proof of demilitarization will be verified if the applicant presents copies of ATF Form 6 and ATF Form 6A that have been completed by appropriate officials of the Department of the Treasury. If the applicant is unable to produce ATF Form 6 or 6A, the FAA certificating office should contact the ATF Firearms and Explosives Import Branch to determine if copies of these forms are available for the particular aircraft. In cases for which ATF Form 6 or 6A are not required or not available, the FAA certificating office manager will determine the extent of demilitarization necessary prior to airworthiness certification

 American military aircraft are never allowed to fly supersonically over the US, under normal peacetime conditions, except in specially designated areas. One such area is the High Altitude Supersonic Corridor (HASSC) in southern California. This corridor extends from northwest of Los Angeles to the Colorado River near Las Vegas, Nevada. A portion of the HASSC passes through the R-2508 Special Use Airspace Complex that includes Edwards Air Force Base, the China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center, and the Army's Fort Irwin. The HASSC is one of several special supersonic zones in the region, and is used by the Air Force, Navy, and foreign militaries for training and flight testing. The aircraft operating in this restricted area are responsible for the many odd rumbling noises and mysterious sounds often reported as secret, exotic, cutting-edge new airplanes supposedly developed at the infamous "Area 51."


Supersonic Corridors near Edwards AFB
Other special supersonic corridors exist througout the United States. Unlike the HASSC, most of these are not part of any Restricted Area, Prohibited Area or MOA (Military Operating Area). An example is a corridor in northeastern New York state near Saranac Lake. While the military controls access to and grants permission to fly supersonically through the HASSC, these other corridors are instead controlled by the FAA.

However, you do raise an interesting question when you correctly point out that a sonic boom created by an aircraft operating at high enough altitude cannot be heard on the ground. Since "controlled airspace" only extends up to 60,000 ft (18,305 m), any pilot flying above that level could conceivably fly as fast as he wanted without risking noise pollution. But how many planes do we have that can reach 60,000+ feet? Not many. The SR-71, F-15, and F-22 are about the only publicly-acknowledged supersonic aircraft that could operate that high, and the SR-71 had to get special permission to fly across-country supersonically.

Nonetheless, there are special circumstances that do allow pilots to exceed Mach 1 over populated areas. US pilots are allowed to do so over South Korea due to the unique defense issues that nation faces. In addition, fighters performing combat air patrols over the US as part of Operation Noble Eagle in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks have broken the sound barrier on occassion to catch up to airliners during air-rage incidents. One such incident occurred over the suburbs of Chicago in October 2001 when two F-16 fighters intercepted an American Airlines flight from LA to Chicago after a passenger began threatening to crash the plane into the Sears Tower.

Obviously Strip, you know enough to know that they actually have received a registration number.  You should also know that registering and getting an airworthiness certificate for these exotics in this country is, what's are the best words to describe this.... strenuous at best.  In my little ole opinion, those aircraft are going to require a hellacious amount of money to even get to that point with the FAA.  Introduce new rules by the TSA, and all of a sudden, those aircraft aren't duch hot commodities any more.   

Seriously, they haven't sold yet, and there were several big dogs in the biz that wanted them until the powers that be quietly told them, "No."  That should tell you something.


The reason I say this, is owing to my involvement in an attempt to import an MiG-29 for a "big dog".  I traveled to see and inspect, actually got to sit in it during an engine run up to prove it ran, I declined the flight check.  The big dog actually got close to trying to bring ehr in, and that little voice came and said, "No, we'll let you bring it in, but it will not fly here."

I hope they can do it, but it is not very likely.


Just for what it is worth, Pride does specialize in Soviet block aircraft restoration.  They seem to do fairly well at restoring and refurbish on jet trainers ( I forget which one) and selling to private sector, seems they would not take the risk of restoring a jet, and being stuck with it.   

No I do not know all the ins and outs of the politics of FAA rulings, but I live close to Pride, and they roll quite a few russian birds through there.
