I don't think he's much shorter or taller than the pilots in the latest WWII planes.

His upper torso is just behind the hump over the MGs that gave Camel its name...and unless I'm going blind he's looking slightly to the right.

That's a very interesting observation, especially considering it looks like his head is facing forward in the second picture....

I think it is a new pilot model, because in the first Dr.1 picture, the pilot also looks like he is looking slightly to the right due to being able to see more of his face. Same sort of deal with the second Dr.1 picture, although you see less of his face.
