+1um sbds were used to dogfight in the early stages  of guadle canal(excuse incorrect spelling if any)if I recal correctly

I know you're a kid and all so I am not trying to be mean but where in the Hell did you get this information?  Is it from your uncle that got shot down in a P-82?  I mean seriously...

The Dauntless was not used as a fighter and the only time they would 'dogfight' is when they were bounced by Japanese fighters.  They never took off to engage the Japanese fighters in aerial combat.

On Guadalcanal, the Dauntless was used in the recce and anti-shipping role and not as fighters.

Oh jeebus...

You're referring to the fight involving Stanley "Swede" Vejtasa flying a SBD-3 when he was bounced by three Zeros as he was returning from a bombing mission.  He did not take off with the sole purpose of dogfighting in his Dauntless.   Again, the Dauntless was not used at any time as a fighter, if it did engage in a dogfight it was because it was bounced and it was trying to defend itself.

You may be confusing it with the TBM, which was used by some squadrons as a night fighter.

I think this statement has just explained EVERYTHING!

Apart from his horrific spelling.
That can never be explained. Aren't Xmas Holidays over yet?

Don't take this as a no but, land-based SBD's only fired a total of 232 rockets during the war. Carrier-based SBD's never fired any rockets at all, so it was very rare. About the time that rocket usage became prevalent the SBD's were being replaced with SB2C's and they used a lot of rockets, 5,542 to be exact.

Heck, PBJ's (B-25C's/B-25H's/B-25J's) fired 2,951 but that's another wish!

So it was very rare, but it was used and would be fun.

I take that as a yes.  :D    Thanks Baumer.
