Cant troll with a Lindy rig. You can drift, or slowly backtroll with one, maybe even slowly troll forward with one. But you have to do it very slowly. Not that they arent effective, but I only use them in drifts or backtrolling specific parts of structure, where you can hover slowly right where you want to be. There are certain basin lakes where you can troll the main basin and catch fish. Like Erie or winnibago, or yours. Most are shallow and there isnt much structure. But a structure filled 100' deep lake probably isnt one of them. There most of the fish will relate to structure.

And yes your right. When a lake "turns over", as a 100' lake will, the fishing will shut down, or at least slow down. A 100' lake should be turned by now however and if I remember right turnover is a much bigger problem in the fall.

The Lindy rig tipped with a leech or minnow will land Walleye every time.

(Image removed from quote.)

I believe this all depends on what you consider "deep". A lot of the inland lakes I fish only get 30 or so feet deep. From sunset until ~midnight we do well trolling right up the gut.

 :salute

EDIT: I should add that a lot of these lakes are wall to wall with crayfish and suckers in the deep portions and that, for the most part, they are quite murky. When the lakes "turn over" the water gets very clouded and the fishing turns off.

This is precisely how you troll with a Lindy rig... very slowly. I'm getting the feeling that you and I fish quite different bodies of water. I fish mostly small, inland lakes and rarely make it out to the big waters (although I have one of the greatest walleye fisheries right next door  :lol).

Contrary to popular belief, even shallower waters will turn over. I've seen it with my own eyes. And yes, it is worse in the fall.

To find 170' here your not going to be able to see land. Nice fish. Right about now until the end of July is when the Big kings are landed. An exception for us is April when the alwives spawn and you have the chance to catch a 20lb'er on a surface rig. But I used to love hunting the big Kings right about now. By mid July I'd be up in Door County WI which is a heck of a steelhead fishery too. I love when you can find a sharp surface scum/Temp line cause you just know the steelies will be stacked like cordwood on it.

What depth/speed/temp/lures were you using? Spoons? What kind?

Yeah doesn't take long on Lake Ontario to reach the deep water, only about 2 miles out to hit 150-180'.  Late Summer/Fall is the time for our real big kings.

We were trolling multiple depths but from about 30-40' down to about 100'.  The kings were caught mostly down around 70-80'.  Like to troll at about 2.5mph surface speed using GPS, but that can vary and can usually tell a good speed by the rigger cables and how the balls show on the fishfinder (can't see 'em means I'm too fast, too strong of a return I'm too slow).  Temp was around 60 degrees on the surface and 45 down 150, no thermocline yet that is why the fish are all scattered but should be setting up soon.  Was trolling spoons on the riggers and spindoctor/fly combos on the wire divers.  Caught all fish on the spoons.  Hooked up twice on the fly combo but both fish got off.  I use the standard size spoons (SS) mixed with a couple stingers.  I use a couple different brands, Northern King, Dreamweaver, Michigan Stinger, etc..  Buy all my Spindoctor combos from Atomik Trolling Flies.

Back out tonight after work, hope I can pick up right where I left off.  Solo fishing tonight, keeps ya busy, but very peaceful.

We stay in Surf City around 4th St (ish)...not to far from Broadway Pizza..........Ill be down after July 13th, PM me around then (ill have my laptop), more than welcome to stop by for a beer or Margarita, or join us for some morning surf fishing, lunch etc  :aok  :D

I love fishing the surf off Surf City, and in Ship Bottom (always up for some other suggestions though) ...just got into it a few years ago, and a buddie has a 54' Bertram down at Barnegate......Now thats a good time  :aok  Im going to take my boat down next year, with it being new to me, i want to make sure i get the feel for it before i take it out on the bay......guy i bought it from use to take it out of Barnegate, its a really deep draft, so it should handle the bay just fine.

Yeah I used Northern Kings and mostly Pro Kings and Evil eyes. All three are very good multi-speed spoons, but I have a lot of spoons of different types. My best fish came off a chartruese evil eye. I had wire setups as well, ran clean or with dipsey/slide divers. I ended up using only slide divers cause you can change your lead with them. Sometimes I'd have a 30' lead off it and when hit the diver would slide down to an inline weight. A favorite of mine was running a slide diver off a downriger cable when the fish were deep and I'd want to cover more width in the troll, since divers dont go as deep when set to go wide. You should be real close to turnover, a week or two maybe. I never fished Ontario but its a great fishery. Boy I miss having a freezer jammed with trout and salmon.

We start early here. In northern IN there are factory warm water discharges and the cohos and trout are stacked like cordwood. Ive been out there in Feb. if the weathers right. In a boats width you can go from 38% to 54% and there have been times weve limited before I could get 6 rigs out. August is a pretty slow month unless you rig for lakers or a west wind brings a temp break close to shore for trout.

No. Ive fished every kind of water you could imagine. Live bait rigs have their place but frankly its been many years since Ive used one much for walleye. I just catch far more fish troling with plastic. Ive trolled the heck out of walleye in 600 acre lakes, usually at night with an electric motor, and huge lakes like Mil Lacs or Leech. Now if I use a bait rig for walleye its for smaller pieces of structure "backtroll", or, If I just want to drift peacefully. Certainly they have their place and like you said each lake is different. :salute

Suppose to be nice here in the morning . I'm going to try trolling for Crappie for a few hour's then I think I will try bouncing a worm off the bottom for Catfish in the deep end of the lake and see how that works , wish I had some goldfish to try . . Got to get up enough for a cook out after Independence day when we head to the Buffalo River for a canoe trip .

,Mbailey I am onLBI on Saturdays for cleaning between tennants so I will PM you. I usually go to Island Beach State park to fish the surf.
If you have a 4 wheeler its worth getting a permit to drive on the beach at the park, its about 10 miles from the entrance to the Barnegat Inlet. During the offnseason I think youcan get apermit to drive on the beach on lbi.
My boat is a 28' Carolina Classic, unfortunately the water at the dock on LBI is a little to shallow.
You'll need a boating safety cert for NJ, its basically a class then a test. Not sure on the cost but it is under $100.
