Yup there are still reports of Cohos being caught.  They are preferred for eating.  But I think fight wise it's tough to beat the King.  :)

Nothing beats a big King in Fresh Water. Im told the big southern stripers are comparable but Ive never caught a big one while Ive caught several 30lb class Chinook out of the Great Lakes. Ive been told at the beginning, most of all out of Ontario, back in the '70s  when the salmon stocking began it was nothing to catch 35 lb and even 40lb class fish on trolling gear. There was such a huge alwife base in the Great Lakes the Salmon and Trout had a field day. Now much about the lakes have changed. They are much clearer due to zebra mussles and the forage base isnt as big. The fishing is still real good but boy was it something in the first 10 to 15 years. I kept up on the eastern Lake Ontario fishery thru a mag called "Great lakes Fisherman", which was a great mag until they folded keeping all their subscribers monies.

Another very exciting fishery used to be the Northern Indiana Skamania steelhead fishery. Skamanias come in to breed in the summer and the huge trout used to stage off the shores of the ST Joe's river and other inlets. Once my brother and I hooked two 20lb class Skamanias at the same time. Its really a big thrill to see such big trout clear the water when jumping. Ive caught Great lakes Salmon and Trout with stomachs full of alwives, alwives choking out of their mouths, and still they'd hit a spoon. They are gluttons to the max when the feed bag is on. The first few weeks of July are always the best time here. The kings are big with pretty silver, the coho have gotten big, the right wind brings the steelies in close, and the Lakers are always easy to catch off the bottom. Its big fish time on the Great Lakes right now. :salute

This video http://youtu.be/rfrDq3SVvkU is funny to watch once you know the story behind it. My wife had never been in a boat before, let alone fishing, when I hooked this King off of Baileys Harbor in Door County WI. It was on 17lb test line and the line had gotten tied up in downrigger cable and I was afraid it was weakened. The surface temp of the water was only 52% and bringing him up did nothing to him. I had seen the Evil Eye had him perfectly jaw hooked and knew if I could just finesse him in, while teaching a total noob how to net, I had him. You can see my old lady shaking her fist at me, what she was saying was "I'll cut the line if you yell at me one more time". It was the last time I hunted summer Kings in Door county with 17lb test line I can tell you.

This was my 17' boat. I bought my 22'er a year later. Good fishing. :salute

To me Kings and lakers are much the same big fat pigs you have a tough time pulling up!

The Coho's.skamania, steelies and atlantics are the acrobats and like to break water, that is a fight in my mind. Kings and lakers are much like walleye and just bulldog with some headshakes.

I know it's different trolling with all the water and open space but I caught most my fish in the rivers, either with flyrod or floatrod and under those conditions the king is second class.

The Steelies, Skamanias, and especially Browns, are to me the most beautiful fish to see. And their acrobatics are just as impressive in open water as they are in streams. The Lakers are such dang good eating steaked out on a weber grill. Boy theres nothing like fresh salmon and trout on the barbie on a summers day. :salute

Dude you're comparing a King to a Mud Chicken??  That is blasphemy!!  :)

A lake trout is like reeling in a shoe.  A King will go acrobatic, not as much as a steelie, and they will make crazy runs and put up a long hard fight.   Cohos may for their size but up the better fight comparably speaking, don't know haven't found one yet, but the power and size of the King is hard to beat.  And nothing like a Laker at least on the open lake.

In NY as of last year we are now able to use 3 rods per angler, instead of two.  Definitely helps when trolling by myself.

Got out yesterday afternoon and this morning.  Not a ton of action and the lake was pretty snotty both days, got tossed around pretty good.  But was able to haul in 3 Kings, 2 Steelhead and 2 Lake trout.  Got a couple pictures of the better two kings from this morning.

Three more weeks and I will be surf fishing in the Outer Banks!!

Ya Bug,I knew it would rub you the wrong way! :devil

Both the Kings and lakers have size on their side so naturally they can give you a good fight and like I said I know it's different out on the lake. I've done some trolling with riggers but it's not my cup of tea.

Another thing to consider is by the time I would be targeting these old boots they have started to change into spawning colours and slowly start to die! Also being in a river limits their ability to make those deep runs that you lake guys get.

It's a totlally different kind of fishing,I never use more than 6lb test line and often it's 4 and even 2 lb line. The rods are made for this and infact my floatrod is rated to break at 10 lbs! so the limit is 8pound test line, although I use 10 lb as a backing line because the reel holds about 600 yrds of 10lb so I;b need about 800 yrds of 8lb to fill the reel.

With my flyrods I use a flyline but the tapered leaders go down to 4 or 6 lb and I tie a leader on to that that is usually much lighter, they use an X rating and 6x can be 4,3.5.3 or even 2.7 lb depending on who makes it and what it's made of.

Get a hook into a good 10 to 12 pound brown or steelie in a river thats wadeable, like 3 ft deep or less and you'l understand what I'm taking about. I've seen fish jump and knock another angler down because it hit him smack in the chest! I've been tripped by a King that swam between my legs than anothe guy had on,even had fish go onshore and back into the water trying to shake the hook.  But most the kings just find a pool and hold unless spooked when they decide to head back to the lake..... :devil

So from my point of view ya kings are old boots and treated as such,I tend to break them off or straighten the hook if I can!  I'd rather catch a half a dozen little guys like Ghi caught than 1 20,30 pound king. I wouldnt eat the big ones anyways and always release them, however I've been known to bring my limit home of brookies just to feast.

Oh and dont ask where I catch the brookies,I'm taking that to the grave!

Almost had what had to be a King rip one of my wire diver rigs out of the hands of my fishing buddy today.  Was a very powerful fish, but ended up shredded the 50# flourocarbon leader on my trolling fly.  :(  Had another crush one of the rigger poles that also got off.  Must be different on the lake, because they is no escaping being amazed by the raw power of these fish.  Ended up going 7 for 10 with 5 Kings and two steelheads.

I use 20# test up until the fleas start showing up then I splice on 150-200 ft of 30# to keep them from sticking.  Could use lighter but since most of the fish are released like to get them to the boat as fast as possible.

Spent over 13 hours on the water today, between fishing and boating.  Was a great 4th, but I'm ready for bed.   :)

No need to break the bank until you know it's something you're actually going to use.  Check out the Scientific Anglers kit.  They make one for panfish, has a rod and reel setup, a small selection of flies to get you started, and comes with an introductory DVD.
To each their pwn.

I had a big King bite a treble hook off once. A heavt trbel on a Pro king spoon. After that I went to offset single hooks for all my salmon gear and cut my loss rate in 1/2. A 30lb+ class King gives you about a 50% chance of landing him. I lost a king that felt like the upper 30'lbs cause of a treble hook after a 15 min fight while on a charter.

They recently held the Billfish Blast again here.  Boats around the world enter the tournament by paying $10,0000 and the winner gets $400,000 for the largest billfish caught that day.

Here's a video from last year.

http://bcove.me/liiglu97

This year two of the boats won first and second fishing in the local waters here.

The winner was a 768lbs Blue Marlin.  Bigger Marlin have been caught this year (see an earlier post in this thread) but to win this tournament you have to catch it on the day.

Here's a link to the article in the local press:

http://bernews.com/2012/07/anglers-reel-in-556lb-768lb-blue-marlins/

My personal feeling is that they should measure and release rather than kill these magnificent fish but it ain't my call.
