mrmidi's TE Tutorials
« on: November 07, 2010, 11:28:29 AM »
I've been getting several PM's and emails about my TE tutorials.
The old TE for Dummies PDF file that is floating around is out dated and no longer valid.

The most current tutorials are the ones on the AHWiki located here Midi's Terrain Tutorials

Hope this clears up any confusion any one has.

There is a funny bug in wiki if you go to wiki - content creation - editors...the wiki won't let you access the information

If you use midi's direct link it lets you see it

Just a heads up

OK I know it's been quite a while since I said I would get the next part of my tutorials posted, but have had quite a lot
going on in the last few months.

This is the first part of the "Working With Elevations for the Terrain Editor" series.
It will show you how to make an elevation bit map to use for creating your terrain.
This is simply a tutorial on the way I do things, it doesn't mean it is the exact or right way to do it but I find it to be the easiest
way, using tools and things that you don't have to buy. With the exception of Photoshop which I reference in my tutorials.
There are other graphics editors that are free you can use also such as Gimp.

As I said this is just the tutorial on how to create the elevation bit map, I have started the next one on how to take that image and make your terrain.
There are a couple of links inside the tutorial to files needed, 2 of which I have hosted on my web site so you won't have to try and hunt them down.

This tutorial is not on the AHWiki yet so I'll link to the .pdf version here.

Working with Elevations part 1 Creating the elevation bit map

I tried to keep the explanations in this one as simple as possible, so I hope it helps.
As usual if you have questions you can post them in the TE forums or PM me directly and I will do my best to get you an answer.

Hope every one has a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season.

The link to download the DEM's does not seem to be working for me. I keep getting the following error.

550 Can't change directory to /pub/data/gtopo30/global/: No such file or directory.

Thank you for all the effort you have put in to getting the masses educated on the use of the TE. I know this takes time.

Sorry if I am being a pain and this particular problem may even be on my end but I don't know how to fix it either.

I am pretty eager to see how this works and how much better it will make my terrains look.

No problem bud... the link in the document is actually an ftp link more for an ftp client... you can
use the following http link and get there as well... you will just have to download them one at a time.
http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/gtopo30/global/

There is also a tiles.gif  image in the folder there which tells you what dem file covers what area of the globe, in case you only need a particular area..

Let me know if you need anything else.

It appears that you can no longer anonymously FTP into the USGS server to get all the DEM files at once.
So you will have to use the http link instead.  http://edcftp.cr.usgs.gov/pub/data/gtopo30/global/

There is an image in there called "tiles.gif" that tells you what DEM file set covers what area in case you don't want the entire globe.
