Taking off, yes.....  But what about landing vectors?  Many a newb may not be aware of their heading.  " I want you to line up runway 8 for the landing. "  That's how it might make for a good thing.

cool and he will ask "how can I tell which one is runway 8 and from which direction?"  as it is you can hardly see the runways untill you are almost on top of them, now you want them to do a flyby to look at a runway number?

Do most new guys even know where the compass is in whatever airplane they're flying?  Much less know how to read it?  All the runways always point the same way on every base of the same size.  If you're approaching from the south, depending on the size of the base you'd be setting up for a landing either NW, N, or NE.  I don't see what would be gained by landing on "runway 35".  Besides, we have the GPS plane icon that shows your location and heading on the clipboard.  If people can't figure out how to get back to base and have even a slight idea of the runway heading best suited for that approach, there are bigger issues than calling vectors for them.  Besides, who's going to play ATC?  You?  Certainly not me...I signed up to play a combat game, not be the schmuck in the tower vectoring people around the field.

turn friendly collisions on and it might be a little useful but the hilarity of watching people scream about somebody running into them might be worth it  :devil

Oooooohhhh HTC collisions on and runway numbers.. I'll even volunteer to work as a traffic controller for a month  :D

It is interesting when the Earth's movement "relocates" a runway number.   :D

the magnetic field does that :)

It depends on the country of origin really, but even today, not all runways have numbers......

(Image removed from quote.)

I do think there are laws in place (at least in the US <FAA>) that all commercial runways need to have a designation.

the X means the runway is closed.

I do not see how this would add to gameplay in any way.

Because runways have numbers just like our planes have skins.

As I said, now, I am actually all for this, especially in the TA, but numbers are more after war than during war.  And not always the case based on country.  Commercial and private fields at this point may have but military airbases didn't really need them for the same reasons people are arguing against the idea here.  Just like we may say in game, RL sticks were ordered to land SW, E, in some crazy CAGs cases, sometime V.......  (Vertical)

Because runways have numbers just like our planes have skins.

You fly don't you?  That's a reference to FAA or NTSB standards of the present day.  This English field, currently may be closed but there is no painted over numbers....  Even today's paints and surface painting techniques, you will see the "old" markings.   :salute

the X means the runway is closed.

Burtonwood Field, UK - 1956

Henderson Field, Guadalcanal - 1959

Mareeba Field, AUS - (Circa WWII)

It does look to have RAF markings   :aok

And I'm surprised nobody has said "if you want realism, all Small Fields should be compacted dirt/gravel/grass fields since we all know a 'real' military field would have more than 1 runway"

Did they paint numbers on grass fields?

(OMG.... Now I thinking I'm swaying back towards no....)

My guess for grass/dirt fields is they just built them into prevailing winds and called it good. I've never seen a picture of a dirt airstrip with runway numbers. This really isn't needed for AH, as the current runway setup works fine.
