Yes not many living captives as the russians tended to shoot all germans fighting or captured.
The French resistance was a brave bunch indeed.
Back to the OP..... the Dewoitine D.520 was considered a good bird. The French pilots just did not have the experience of the germans they were fighting. Even the germans put the D.520 to use after the fall of France. Many sat on the assembly lines waiting for things like propellers. The unfinished birds were completed by the germans and put to use in the fight.
Actually, the French pilots did quite well during the Battle for France. Out of the 351 D.520s that reached French squadrons at the time for the Battle of France, the D.250 accounted for 114 air to air kills, 39 probables while losing 54 to enemy action.
Under Vichy control, during the Syrian-Lebenon campaign, the D.250 accounted for 31 air to air kills (against British and Australian aircraft), 11 loses from enemy air to air action and 24 lost to AA, accidents and bombing attacks.
In other actions by the Vichy D.250 squadrons, one squadron (GC III/3) shot down an entire squadron flying the Fairy Albacore from HMS Fury.
Of the two Vichy D.250 squadrons that actively opposed the Allied invasion during Operation Torch, the Vichy French naval squadron Flotille 1F, saw action against US Navy planes. The D.250 didn't fair so well, losing at least one confirmed D.250 (some reports put it as high as 6 D.250s lost to USN Wildcats) while the USN Wildcats only losses were do to ground and friendly fire while claiming a confirmed 14 kills.
