B-29 wish, sorta... *contrails*
« on: February 18, 2011, 04:00:03 PM »
Haha, now that I have your attention....

I realize it's been said before multiple times, but with the imminent arrival of the Superfort, we need contrails! Make them an optional feature for lower end graphics PCs. Contrails are an ever present item in the old pictures and films of these warbirds at high altitude.

+1, and to every feature like this to make the game look even more realistic.   AH has come along way graphically but there is always room for improvement.   I'd like to see vapor trails off wingtips for tight-turning aircraft, too.

Only problem I can see is they are persistent... This can only be done on a server side basis. They would have to loop and follow along then stay there for 5, 10, 15 minutes. That's a long time, and then if you get a lot of cons crossing previous contrails it gets really complicated.

All this the server has to track. All this has to be transmitted to you. Lag would introduce other issues, as well. Position reports would have the contrails 500 yards off from the plane originating them, or possibly in front of the plane...

It's nice for limited scope games, or offline games... But for AH that's a tall request. One I would love to see, but to do it right would require a LOT.

Clouds that look like clouds first, then contrails... that turn into clouds.

To offset the in-game/server limitations, how about adding the option to the film-viewer
instead of the game? This would allow contrails to be seen in films, perfect for
taking screenshots and creating movies, the like, without the server needing to do the
work.

This also helps players with low end PCs, such as myself, to view the eye-candy later
without having to deal with a low frame-rate. Currently I run the game with anti-aliasing
set [off], but turn it [on] for when I want to take screenies from a film. I'm trying to point
out that it may be possible to do something similar, and worth the time.

I'm pretty sure this wouldn't be that hard. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

We already have the option to disable other player skins and gun effects such as empty hulls coming out of the guns so I don't think this would be that hard  :airplane:

well if you dont want it on then. have it like the graphics detail, select what you want on, im running ground detail and water detail and water reflections. make it an option to have it on or off through the options menu.

I don't think there would be a problem with the trail keeping up with the plane, because fuel leaks and smoke trails do so just fine.

How about a compromise...  Why not make contrails that are just "fuel" leaks, but set them to be several times longer then regular fuel leaks.  They wouldn't be as persistant as contrails, but might give the right feel...  Just a thought...
