Your childhood dream job
« on: March 26, 2011, 08:40:15 PM »
How often did you guys change your mind?

I wanted to be an architect, for a long time ( 4 years+ ), but ive gained a keen interest in international affairs. I think what going on in Japan and Lybia are very interesting, which makes me believe id like to work with the UN, or Nato, or just do something with with international issues. I'd like to know what im going to do with my future NOW, i just hope this is it.

I'm wondering whether to go into architecture or astronomy (either theoretical physics or NASA).  My dream is to be the first man on Mars.

I always liked the medical field. Either a Family Physician, Virologist/ Microbiologist, or Thoracic Surgeon. But I could also take my microbiology to the KDFWR and work on wild animal diseases such as CWD, LGBV, and Rabies.

Always wanted to be a pilot, so far I'm on the right track.

I'm a student pilot with 55 hours, still pretty far from my commercial, but I'm not in a hurry. I love every minute of it.

I wanted to be a Police Officer when I was very young...

Then an Air Force Officer...

Then an Aerospace Engineer (went to college for this)

Then an AE in the Air Force, the opportunity faded away with the politics of post Gulf War 1.

Then I managed a high volume photo processing lab, very bizarre events brought me to this

Then I went into business for myself as a professional photographer, which is how I make my living today

Wow, you're just a baby pilot at 55 hours.  There is definitely a "right track" for professional pilots.  It will start with a quality 4 year college that offers a Professional Pilot program.  Then after graduation, you will instruct and try to get as many multi engine cross country hours as possible.  If you are lucky, you will get a job as a commuter airline pilot, which pays pretty poorly, but allows you to rack up large numbers of multi engine cross country hours until you can get picked up by one of the major airlines.

At least thats how it was 25 years ago when I was in AE school but most of my friends were Pro Pilot students.  I doubt that it has changed much, it's probably even harder now.  When I was in college, the pilot students were training to replace all of the Vietnam era pilots who were starting to hit their retirement age.
