not sure what the wheel has to do with a civilization having a massive knowledge of astronomy but...if you say so. seems to me any civilization that could cut stone with the same precision as modern machinery and build massive structures without the the wheel, had to have some knowledge beyond your understanding.
Its all moot anyways. The Maya didn't predict the end of the world at that date, they simply stopped bothering to calculate their calendar out any further due to it being, oh, 1300ish years away. Their calendar was more accurate than ours, but there were no apocalyptic bits to it. That stuff was added on recently by bad fiction writers.
Somebody actually went down to the Yucatan area of Mexico and asked a Mayan priest if the world was going to end in 2012. As I recall he thought the question was absurd and that it was stupid to think the world was going to end.
