2012 End of The World?
« on: May 02, 2011, 10:25:37 PM »
Not trying to get too deep here, but it seems like this topic has been brought up
quite a bit these days, between my friends and family members.
Just wondered what your opinions were on 12.21.2012.

My opinion is simple.  I hope it ain't true.

So you think a culture that never had the wherewithal to develop the wheel could predict the end of civilization?  Sheeesus. Dumb people everywhere- frankly I'm surprised you survived Y2K.

not sure what the wheel has to do with a civilization having a massive knowledge of astronomy but...if you say so. seems to me any civilization that could cut stone with the same precision as modern machinery and build massive structures without the the wheel, had to have some knowledge beyond your understanding.

I am with Spikes,..uh,...in an idea sort of way, not in a man-love sort of way.  :)

Have to figure it this way.  If it is going to end, there is nothing I can do about it, so why waste precious time worrying about it?  If it is not going to end, then I will not have wasted precious time worrying about it.

All I have to worry about is the backlash from the first sentence of this post.  Now, THAT IS something to worry about.

I don't think you can beat that. :)

Uh, the world can't end on a good movie year.  Not when Joss Whedon is so close to getting his oscar. :)

I plan on living past 2012 as well, even if it's on another planet.  Plenty of room in the TARDIS, y'all.

We are planning on having a "2012 party" in my neighborhood. I'm gonna be up in the plane waiting for the end of the world.

Its all moot anyways.  The Maya didn't predict the end of the world at that date, they simply stopped bothering to calculate their calendar out any further due to it being, oh, 1300ish years away.  Their calendar was more accurate than ours, but there were no apocalyptic bits to it.  That stuff was added on recently by bad fiction writers.

Somebody actually went down to the Yucatan area of Mexico and asked a Mayan priest if the world was going to end in 2012.  As I recall he thought the question was absurd and that it was stupid to think the world was going to end.
