Question for Experienced P-40 Pilots
« on: July 25, 2011, 02:25:53 PM »
I'm wondering, in your opinion, which aircraft would be the best match for a dual for both the P-40B and P-40E, other than another P-40  :)
This is assuming that the pilot skill of all planes are equally matched.
I'm looking for a fighter for the P-40B and a fighter/attack for the P-40E.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Ki-61 or Yak 9T might be a decent fight for the E model.  P-40B has no peer in Aces High.  :lol

A6Ms are not a real comparison. The P-40s have some pretty wide turn radii by comparison. For a "duel" (not dual, which would mean 2 of them) any fight would be over because duels devolve into stall fights and who-turns-tightest fights, neither of which the P-40 does well.

If you want to fight a zeke there are certain things you can do in combat, but these are not what you find in a dueling environment.

If we're looking at a coalt/e duel,  an FM2 is going to pwn a p40.
The F4F might be interesting, or a 110c

Keep the info. coming, I find it quite useful.  Even the spell check, thanks Krusty.
I'm planning on building some type of offline mission with the P-40's on one side, and all else on the other.
It doesn't matter from what country the planes come from.  I've never been good at designing missions based on history.
I just want a fair fight.

Thanks and please continue...

I like to fly the p40e. Its a good, stable gun platform and is very nice for perk farming. Depending on the alt of the fight, I like to take it into furballs somewhere between 8-12k. Its only positive attribute is that its a good diver, so with enough speed it can pounce on low, slow, unsuspecting enemies. However, if you have to do any sustained maneuvering to get a shot or evade an enemy, then you will bleed energy like a stuck pig and become lunch meat. engaging furballers and getting quick picks with friendlies covering my back is the only time I'm ever successful in a war hawk. 1v1, the opponent would have to really F up for you to have a chance because once he gets on your 6 theres almost nothing you can do. Getting a kill or two is normally not a problem, but surviving long enough to land 'em is. Lets face it, when a p40 makes an appearance in the MA every con out there is thinking, "hhhmmm shrimp on the barbie!".

The thing about the p40 is that...its a flying bicycle. As long as you keep your speed up, you can tango with anything as long as you don't play to their strengths because just about any given plane can out turn, out climb and out run a p40. Since its so slow, I would pair it up against something that is a real dog if it gets as slow as the war hawk

That's kinda what I'm going for Shotty.  Was thinking of doing a mission with early war rides only.  Just to have a change of pace for folks.
I think I'll try it tonight using the 109 E4, Spit I, Hurri I and maybe the F4F as opponents for the P-40's.

I can only give you an AvA perspective.

P-40B - assuming equal pilots - has no useful counterparts.  Possibly some of the four-engine bombers.

P-40E is a great plane.  Tony (Ki-61) is a good match, as is the C202.  Both of the Axis fighters will probably come out on top, but the match is close enough that pilot skill really will make the difference.  109E is another good fight.

Hmm, wonder if I should omit the P40-B from the mission and just have one side all P-40-E's.

well ....I must do something wrong then...I find the P40E stall fights just fine with a A6M5....and this is against guys who I consider better than myself...this may just be due to game dynamics though....

And as others have said...the Ki61/ c202 is always a good fight for it

P40E is a fun plane. used to fly it a lot, and would often get slower then slow just for the joy of making others overshoot. if you can get a turn and capitalize on an enemies error you can truely amaze some pilots. the 6X.50's can rip apart planes. many times i found myself turning against "better" planes with "better" pilots then me and still held with them until i got picked. always enjoyed fighting navy birds in it, except for the FM2.

good luck!  :salute
