Hmmm VF-8 was on the Hornet and their top scorer had 2 kills in Wildcats.  The squadron had 5 total.

Jimmy Thach had VF-3.

I guess the years play tricks on a guy.

Who ya gonna believe Guppy, the history books, or the guy who was actually there?  Well, sorta there...
maybe, a little there..almost  :lol

 John 'Wildcat' King

Enlisted:   Jan. 12, 1937

Discharged:    Apr. 19, 1949

Branch:   Navy

Rank:   Commander

Aircraft Flown:   Wildcat, FM2, Hellcat, SBD Dauntless, and C47

Confirmed Kills:   14

KIA Letters Home:   52

Squadrons:   VF8 on the USS Yorktown Until Midway and then the 14th Allied Air force

Misc. Duties:   Training Officer for one and a half years

Reason For Discharge:   Medically Discharged due to compression of the spinal cord from the ejection seat trials.

"I did my duty when it was needed; just as all forces are doing right now."

-Commander John 'Wildcat' King

Hmmm.  The comprehensive work "Fighter Aces of the USA' by Toliver and Constable, lists 4 pilot's named King as Aces.  None named John.  None in the US Navy.  The only King that was an Ace in the PTO was flying 38s.  The other three were ETO Mustang or Jug drivers.

Seems to be some confusion here.  Curious how a Navy pilot ended up with the 14th Air Force USAAF in China too.  No Hellcats, SBDs or FM2s with them.  And Navy Goonies were R4D, not C47

i dont know much other then he flew wildcats in WW2(thats all ive been told)I havnt bothered to check the timelines and stuff.how am i partially correct?

Because you were correct in that your squadron mate claims that is him flying a Wildcat during the war but incorrect in that the pilot actually flying that Wildcat is your squadron mate.

Basically, vWildcat is trying to pull the wool over your eyes and those of your squadron mates.  He never served in World War II, wasn't born in 1916 (he'd be pushing 96 now) nor did he ever fly a Wildcat, Dauntless, C-47 or any other plane he's claimed to have flown.  My guess the closest he's ever gotten to those planes was probably in an air museum.

Squadrons:   VF8 on the USS Yorktown Until Midway and then the 14th Allied Air force

VF-8 was stationed onboard USS Hornet until just after Midway when it was de-established in August of 1942 until it was re-established in 1943 and then was stationed onboard USS Bunker Hill until the end of the war.

There was no such thing as the "14th Allied Air Force", it was the USAAF 14th Air Force in the China/CBI theater.

I earned my "Callsign" after the mission that sank the IJN HIRYU, LtCdr Thatch allowed me to put this on my AC, and named me 'Wildcat'.

I don't know why a commander from a completely different squadron in a different air wing would give vWildcat his callsign, let alone authorize him to paint it on his plane.  Hiryu was attacked by planes from Enterprise, and none of the planes from Hornet were involved in the attack that sunk Hiryu.

More medals then Jimmy Thach too. Wow!  More medals then Tom Blackburn of VF-17.  More then Jimmy Flatley!

Wow this guy was something.  Surprised he wasn't CAG of some air group by the end of the war like the guys he out medaled.

I'd rather caution on the side of extremely gullible than calling him a liar.  I'd like to hear what he has to say about it and if he has any old documentation to share.  I want to believe really badly, that would be so cool if a 95 year old world war 2 vet was playing aces high.

Seriously?

There are loads of people like this guy who lie as much or more, in person.  He's doing it with the relative anonymity of the internet.

Unless you were being sarcastic.

I dont think he was being sarcastic, and I have the same sentiments as Grizz does.
