I really believe that many of the higher ranked people take their self esteem from there ability to excel in this game. And they work long and hard to keep their rank/score up so they feel good about themselves. I don't understand it as I have a wife, kids and several other hobbies that I feel are more productive both monetarily and emotionally, but if that's what floats their boats, more power to them.

I personally don't understand the concept of worrying about a cartoon life..it actually boggles my mind...

if you're actually trying to shoot down the other guy, you're trying to stay "alive". If you really don't care about your cartoon life, you'd just let everyone shoot you down every time.

granted, people take it to different levels.

Aces High is like golf; you can only cheat/lie to yourself, and regardless, whatever score you attain doesn't change anything as the game continues.

Also just like finishing 18 holes, the tour ends at the end of the month, in which the scores are wiped out and you start over.

You can't divide by zero.
wrongway

I would respond, but....ok I will.

Treat the zero condition as a special case. Maybe show the player "undefeated" or something. I don't know
Just add a 1 to the zero or skip the divide if zero. Granted, the more you die the less difference it makes. But, if you only die a few times, it makes a difference.

EDIT: Also, maybe it's this way already, I don't know. But, maybe score the shooting down of a bomber MORE than the shooting down of a fighter. That's how the Luftwaffe did it. I think they considered a buff kill as 3x a fighter kill...points wise that is. Not number of kills.

I think the rankings are fairly easy to manipulate and not entirely reflective of respective skill levels but do show individuals and squads motivations and flying styles.....

Does this mean I'm a score ho?

Hello Nishi,

You pretty much summed it up in the quoted sentence.  To answer your question, the want or trying to survive and land kills does not make you a score HO.

Having a low score does not necessarily mean you are "manipulating" anything - it simply means you are actively participating in the four basic disciplines of the game - fighter, attack, bomber and GV.  I myself usually achieve a pretty reasonable overall score, but am far from being a good fighter pilot - I just get bored doing the same thing over and over and enjoy all aspects of the game.  Am I a score potato - absolutely :rock.  Score gives me a broad gauge for my own personal improvement, however I do pay closer attention to my K/D (I do not fly conservative, I just like to get home) and hit percentage.

sidenote: K/D is just one aspect of score, every other stat is just as important.

Dummies Guide to AH fighter stats

•K/D? - pilot's style
•kills per hour? - pilot's aggressiveness
•kills per sortie? - pilot's effectiveness
•hit percentage? - ymmv
•ride(s)? - *can* give additional insight when the above are factored in.

Toss in similar for the other score categories and you can get an overall idea about someone that may or may not be in evidence if/when you actually encounter them.

<edit: plus, some do play for "score" or "stats" whether overall or simply in one category, for recognition or for themselves alone.>

I've noticed that many of those with Low Score also have more hours per month in game. Like anything practice makes you better and more seat time will improve your skill. For those with few hours to play sometimes staying alive or gaining alt. advantage is not only smart but necessary. I check score to see how crappy I'm doing in certain areas and try to improve. Trying to defeat someone better is the best way to gain skill.

Hours in game vs kills means nothing.

I spend a lot of time climbing to 34k buffs and driving tanks to enemy strats.

A lot of people won't fly further than a sector or with more than 50% fuel.

As long as there are scores and rankings, there will be people who care less about how they get a kill than the fact that they at least get a kill.

I consider myself a pretty average pilot, maybe "decent, plus a little." I'm no uber stick, and that's OK.

For a couple of tours I said "I wanna see what kind of score tarding I can do." I never flew in fighter mode unless in a Tempest, and always came i high. I picked furballs, stayed fast, and disregarded most challenges, instead going for the easy targets. My fighter scores were great, staying over 15+ k/d for most of those tours, until I became bored (and drunk on a few occasions) and decided to abandon my plans and do "dumb" things. Still finished the tours with k/d's and rankings that put me in the top 2% or so of players in the game. Probably 95% of my flights were "lone wolf" as well, no one to clean my 6 or rope up easy kills for me.

Any time I see scores or rankings referenced, I think of myself as an example of what hogwash the score/rank system is.

You want a great k/d? run from fights where you don't have the significant advantage, and if you do have advantage and engage, run from that fight if you start losing that advantage.

Fly with the horde, or join a squad where you can fly in a pack and always have 3-4 guys who will clean a con off your 6 if you get outflown and can't get away.

Regarding the original thread that prompted this thread, I'm very familiar with a few of the guys in that squad, having fought them many times. I'm sure they're great guys, and well liked by their countrymen, and I could probably have a beer (or sake) with them and have a good 'ol time. What strikes me is this: Their scores/ranks are not so much a function of their skills as much as they are a function of their behavior and style of gameplay.

Take that for what it's worth.

Getting a fantastic K/D is easier than getting a fantastic fighter score. I could get the top fighter K/D if I would try. I'm "good enough" for that.  But I have no chance at all to achieve fighter rank #1, I'm simply not good enough for that.

It isn't that hard, you can definitely do it.
