Yup. People need to take responsibility for their animals and keep them on their own property.
I have a couple dogs. My female used to occasionally get out and run around.
Thing is. If I forget to lock my sliding glass door, she knows how to open the door and would jump the fence that was put up specifically to keep the dogs in the yard.
We didnt know this was going on at first. We would come home and yell at each other for forgetting to close the back door. Not because the dogs could get because hey. We had a the yard fenced in and the dogs were always home when we got there. Then one day someone was doing something in the yard next door that got her all excited. We watched in disbelief as she grabbed at the door and pulled it open and ran outside.
Ok. so now we know who was leaving the door open.
Couple days later. My wife is talking with one of the neighbors who then told us what we didnt know.
Every day after I left for work. She would see our female jump the fence and run around the neighborhood. She also wouldnt come when called either. but about 20 min before my wife would get home. she would jump back over the fence and into our yard again.
Why she didnt tell us sooner I dont know. But about a month later I get a phone call from one of our township police officers letting me know he had caught the dog and put her back in the yard.. I thank him ans ask him if he happend to attach her to the leash we decided to leave tied to the fence by the gate. Jusst in case we forgot to lock the dooor and the neighbor caught her. He said no. So I tell him she's probably going get out again.
About an hour after that I get another call from my vet. someone else has called saying they now spotted the dog running around, had her. but in writing the ID number down from the Vet tag we had on her she got away and he could catch her. Fortunately at this point I was on my way home.
I get home and there she is. Laying on the couch as if nothing happend and she was there all day.
Point is. The owner may not even know they were out or getting out.
